Martha Ritchie: Boreal Relief

Boreal Relief is a collection of linocut prints based on images drawn from the forest that surrounds my home and studio in the Yukon.
What started as prints on paper have evolved into three-dimensional paper sculptures and wearable prints on clothing. The sculptures and clothing items echo the images of boreal flora and fauna found in the wall art, creating a sense of being present in the natural environment.
The work in this collection is both a celebration of the beauty and tranquility of the boreal forest as well as an expression of a desire to blend into nature.
In our world, there has been an increasing disconnection from the natural environment, but recently there is a growing desire to reconnect with nature for reflection, relaxation and healing. The past two years have heightened this longing for a peaceful escape. Spending time in the Boreal forest is a gift that can provide this relief.
