Shhhhh, Speakeasy…100 years after the secret Speakeasies were born out of the 1920s prohibition, The Sunset Theatre in Wells is hosting its third Speakeasy Festival, which originated in Summer 2022 as a celebration of being able to gather again and “Speak Easy” after 2 years of pandemic. The Speakeasy Festival was also created as a platform to present new Canadian plays born out of our Sunset Exploration Series – a creation development series for emerging and established Canadian playwrights, as well as hosting other independent theatre productions developed outside of the Sunset.
This year’s Festival goers will experience 4 different shows at the Sunset Theatre over the course of the long weekend between August 1 – 3.
The long weekend in Wells kicks off on Friday, August 1st with our friends at Island Mountain Arts and Ramshackle Theatre hosting Theatre in the Bog, an offering of five site specific 10 minute plays performed through the Wells Meadow from 7:30PM – 9:30PM.
After Theatre in the Bog the action moves to the Sunset Theatre for a 10PM evening concert with The Salt Weather Trio and a Late Night Speakeasy to Kick Off our LONG WEEKEND SPEAKEASY FESTIVAL!

FIRST NIGHT • FRIDAY, AUGUST 1ST, 2025 • 10PM ’TIL LATE!
10PM TO 11PM • THE SALT WEATHER CONCERT • $20.00
(August 1, 2 and 3!)
We kick off our SpeakEasy Festival with a late night concert with Vancouver based band, The Salt Weather – a harmony-driven trio whose sound is as expansive and grounded as the geography that shaped them. With roots stretching from the still waters of Southern Ontario to the salt air of the Pacific Coast, their music is born of lake and sea—songs shaped by water and wind. Blending folk, indie, and atmospheric elements, their voices move like weather systems: distinct, layered, and emotionally true. The Salt Weather creates music for ocean mornings, shifting skies and the places in-between. They’ll be playing all 3 nights at 10pm!
11PM TO 1AM – THE SUNSET SPEAKEASY • FREE
(August 1, 2 and 3!)
The nightly Speakeasy gathering…what is that you say? Well – Speakeasy is a very casual late night gathering where you can chill and chat with friends while you listen or dance to some all decades tunes. We turn the stage into a cozy lounge with comfy seats, tables and funky lighting, creating an inviting atmosphere for a late night night-cap and hang out with friends!

DAY 2 • SATURDAY, AUGUST 2ND • 7PM ’TIL LATE
7PM – 8:15PM • HOLDING THE DOOR OPEN FOR FAMOUS PEOPLE • $20.00 (August 2 & 3)
Written and Performed by Karen Planden, Directed by Dirk Van Stralen • Wells, BC
Holding The Door Open For Famous People is an epic tale of what happens when a young prairie girl comes face to face with her dreams of fame, fortune and Broadway in the Big Apple. Is it fate or fortune that leads her to right where she’s supposed to be.
9PM – 10PM • BREAK A LEG • $20.00
Written and Performed by Brian Fidler, Ramshackle Theatre • Whitehorse, Yukon
Break A Leg is a collectively improvised tale inspired by Tramadol, extra-strength Tylenol and the power of community. Created through the haze of a badly broken leg, Fidler draws the audience into his experience through storytelling and games that speak to the better part of human nature and our innate desire to help each other in challenging circumstances.
