DESCRIPTION:About: Using found imagery and language as well as short writing and drawing exercises we will play with chance connections and see what meaning can be made at the intersection of word and image. Invitation to bring any text or imagery (on paper) you have to hand and might like to work with. No previous writing or drawing experience necessary. \nRefreshments and snacks will be available\, or bring your own dinner with you! Pay what you can with all proceeds going to the artist. Ages 14+⁠ \nAbout the Artist: Cathy Stonehouse is a poet\, writer\, teacher and visual artist who migrated as a young adult from the UK to Vancouver\, BC—the unceded traditional territories of the Musqueam\, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations—where they still live. The author of a novel\, The Causes (Pedlar Press\, 2019)\, a collection of short fiction\, Something About the Animal (Biblioasis\, 2011) and two previous collections of poetry—Grace Shiver (Inanna Publications\, 2011) and The Words I Know (Press Gang\, 1994)\, Stonehouse also co-edited the ground-breaking anthology Double Lives: Writing and Motherhood (McGill-Queen’s University Press\, 2008)\, is a previous editor of EVENT magazine\, and currently teaches creative writing and interdisciplinary expressive arts at Kwantlen Polytechnic University.\nTheir most recent book\, Dream House (Nightwood Editions)\, a long poem\, is short listed for the 2024 Dorothy Livesay Poetry Prize.

DESCRIPTION:The Brain Porter:\nStrapped with an upright bass\, a 40-gallon suitcase on one foot\, a pile of antler bones on the other\, and enough FX pedals to kill a bear\, The Brain Porter conjures a sound that baffles anyone devoted to “tradition” — and frankly\, a few people who aren’t. The story starts at age nine with an upright bass that was nearly as tall as he was.\nFrom there he moved through jazz groups where he learned to listen harder than he played\, orchestras where discipline met reverence\, folk circles where a song’s only job was to tell the truth\, and rock bands where the truth got turned up to eleven. Each world left its fingerprints. None of them could fully contain him. Years working as a sound and lighting technician taught him how rooms hear\, how light moves bodies before brains can object\, and how to run cable in the dark without swearing too loudly. That hard-won expertise now powers a light show that isn’t bolted onto the performance — it is the performance\, co-conspirator to whatever chaos is unfolding onstage.\nThe instrument list raises eyebrows. Upright bass remains the anchor. Surrounding it: theremin\, harmonica\, guitar\, a homemade stompbox built from actual antler bones (the hardware store options were deemed insufficiently weird)\, and a suitcase that serves as percussion\, luggage\, and occasional conversation piece. It’s not a gimmick. It’s load-bearing infrastructure. Influences include Beck\, Tom Waits\, Ween\, Beefheart\, and Zappa — artists who collectively never once agreed to pick a lane. The songs reflect that lineage. Humor is treated with surgical seriousness. Serious subjects get enough salt to scorch the original flavor. \nThe Brain Porter occupies a singular frequency: strange enough to stop a conversation\, just barely accessible enough to start a new one. He could make Prine chuckle. He could make Primus headbang. Both Saturday-night festival crowds and intimate houseconcert audiences stumble into a musical void they didn’t know they were missing. \nKim MacGregor:\nA reformed bank manager\, Kimberley realized she was doing a successful job of living someone else’s life—and a poor job living her own. In 2013\, she launched her original songs into the world and took centre stage. \nShe has since released three full-length albums\, and was awarded Female Artist of the Year at both the 2015 and 2016 Edmonton Music Awards. In 2022\, she relocated to Vancouver Island\, residing in Qualicum Beach. \nShe lovingly crafts and passionately performs songs that will move your heart\, change your mind and stomp your feet. Weaving seamlessly between blues\, folk and rock\, her common threads are strength\, vulnerability and badassery\, always sizzling with soul.

DESCRIPTION:Celebrating 20 years \nIn June 2004\, Julia Mackey travelled to Normandy\, France\, for the 60th Anniversary of D-Day. She attended many ceremonies\, walked the coastline and interviewed dozens of veterans who had returned for the occasion. The experiences of the veterans\, her own discoveries\, and a life long interest in Remembrance Day\, led to the development of the play in August of 2006 at The Sunset Theatre in Wells\, BC. \nTHE PLAY \nJake’s Gift is a multi-award winning Canadian play about a World War II veteran’s reluctant return to Normandy\, France\, for the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings. While revisiting the shores of Juno beach\, Jake encounters Isabelle\, a precocious 10-year-old from the local village. Isabelle’s inquisitive nature and charm challenge the old soldier to confront some long-ignored ghosts – most notably the war-time death of his eldest brother\, Chester\, a once promising young musician. At its heart\, Jake’s Gift is about the legacy of remembrance and makes personal the story behind one soldier’s grave. \nSince 2007\, Jake’s Gift has gone on to play at festivals and theatres in over 250 communities across Canada\, including International stops to Washington State\, the UK and Normandy\, France\, for the 70th & 73rd Anniversary of D-Day. In June 2019\, the company returned to Normandy for the 75th Anniversary of D-Day. They presented performances in both French and English at the Juno Beach Centre and La Salle de la Mer in Bernières sur Mer as well as other communities and venues in Normandy. \nIn December 2025\, Julia received the Governor General Meritorious Service Cross Award for her work on Jake’s Gift.

DESCRIPTION:Celebrating 20 years \nIn June 2004\, Julia Mackey travelled to Normandy\, France\, for the 60th Anniversary of D-Day. She attended many ceremonies\, walked the coastline and interviewed dozens of veterans who had returned for the occasion. The experiences of the veterans\, her own discoveries\, and a life long interest in Remembrance Day\, led to the development of the play in August of 2006 at The Sunset Theatre in Wells\, BC. \nTHE PLAY \nJake’s Gift is a multi-award winning Canadian play about a World War II veteran’s reluctant return to Normandy\, France\, for the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings. While revisiting the shores of Juno beach\, Jake encounters Isabelle\, a precocious 10-year-old from the local village. Isabelle’s inquisitive nature and charm challenge the old soldier to confront some long-ignored ghosts – most notably the war-time death of his eldest brother\, Chester\, a once promising young musician. At its heart\, Jake’s Gift is about the legacy of remembrance and makes personal the story behind one soldier’s grave. \nSince 2007\, Jake’s Gift has gone on to play at festivals and theatres in over 250 communities across Canada\, including International stops to Washington State\, the UK and Normandy\, France\, for the 70th & 73rd Anniversary of D-Day. In June 2019\, the company returned to Normandy for the 75th Anniversary of D-Day. They presented performances in both French and English at the Juno Beach Centre and La Salle de la Mer in Bernières sur Mer as well as other communities and venues in Normandy. \nIn December 2025\, Julia received the Governor General Meritorious Service Cross Award for her work on Jake’s Gift.
