The past two years have heightened this longing for a peaceful escape. The gallery will be open Thursday – Sunday\, with a holiday closure from December 25th\, 2021 to January 5th 2022).\n\n\n\nTo submit a piece: Please fill out the information below no later than Dec 5th\, 2021. Submissions limited only by wall space. We may only be able to accept 1 work.\n\n\nhttps://forms.gle/7e1GiymyESVVRgUC7\n\n\n\nIn recognition of time rendered\, any artist who submits a work will receive a Membership for IMA\, the benefits of which can be found here: http://support-imarts.com/membership\n\n\nWorks will be selected by Dec 5th\, 2021.\n\n\n\nWe will schedule work drop-off between Dec 6th and Dec 8th\n\n\n\nIt is our Intent to host a coffeehouse event for the opening of this exhibit. Days are comprised of morning lessons\, afternoon special interest sessions and evening performances\, with time for coffee and catch-up throughout! We hope you’ll join us! \n\n\nMORNING INSTRUCTION | NOVICE / INTERMEDIATE / ADVANCED HARP; CELLO (ALL LEVELS)\n\n\n\n\nMaximum class size of 12.\nNOVICE HARP WITH SHOSHANNA GODBER\nPractice Strategies – making the most out of your practice time is a skill that needs to be learned alongside any instrument. Shoshanna will share her favourite strategies for learning and getting ready to perform your pieces. \nTechnique – we’ll work on developing a relaxed technique in order play pain-free and with the best tone possible. \nCreativity – with the right tools improvisation turns from being scary to opening up a whole new way to fall in love with the harp. Shoshanna will share her improvisation toolbox to help you make your own music no matter your reading or playing level. \n\n“The novice class will consist of three main topics. Every day we will spend time warming up and working on developing proper technique. I will go over fundamentals such as how to sit at the harp to avoid injury\, developing a relaxed hand position\, best placement of fingers on the strings and proper follow through into the palm. After the warm-up/technique time we will work on learning repertoire. The amount of pieces will be determined by the participants’ playing level. Through these pieces we will work on practice strategies such as analyzing the piece for patterns\, placing all fingers in a bracket\, dividing the piece into easily learned chunks (even if that is only one bar at a time) and how to coordinate playing hands together. Towards the end of the week we will switch from practicing to learn a piece to strategies to prepare to perform a piece. I will provide recordings of the pieces to aid students in learning the pieces regardless of their note reading ability. Lastly\, I will introduce improvisation strategies to help students develop the ability to work creatively on the harp. Strategies will include descending bass lines\, pentatonic tuning and a simple repeated chord progression. SUMMARY:Exhibit: Lineage
DESCRIPTION:As an artist\, my upbringing\, heritage and family history have long served as inspirations for my work. Over the years\, these founding motivations have compounded\, evolved\, mutated and combined to form new pathways\, leading to new ideas. “Lineage\,” not only traces my family history and how it has come to affect my work\, but it also pinpoints the origins of thoughts and motifs that have recurred in my work since childhood. It charts the development of an artist\, the creative process and the transformation of ideas from the first seeds of curiosity to tangible works of art. – Haley Bassett \nThe show comprises 50-plus works\, spanning several mediums including oil paintings\, charcoal\, watercolor\, ceramics\, natural materials\, photographs and ink drawings. It includes works from Bassett’s early childhood\, as well as found objects\, references\, books\, personal belongings\, studies and notebooks. \nThe composition of these varied objects in the space provide a peek behind the curtain\, as it were\, to the process of creativity and inspiration\, highlighting the unstructured and unsuspecting ways that ideas form and build off of each other. Lineage runs counter to the narrative that artists exist in vacuums of lone genius\, and that their work resides only in a product of a painting. It provides an open and candid access point to the beauty of process\, not only as it relates to ancestry\, but in the way we develop\, hold to and understand our narratives of personal truth.\nIsland Mountain Arts is incredibly grateful to be hosting Lineage through our Summer season\, beginning June 30th with a gallery opening from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM. The gallery will be open Wednesday through Sunday until August 22nd. Indoor capacities will be in accordance with the guidelines from the PHO.

Check our Island Mountain Arts’ website for more information! \nWorkshop Description:\nHow do we set down our family histories? Stories may be told again and again\, but what if we want to leave a more permanent record? From triggering memories to working with heirloom objects\, recording interviews and initiating library/archival research\, we will explore a variety of ways to creatively put our histories onto the page. Learn to write your own memories in full sensory detail and how to interview others to acquire vibrant elements of their stories. Over this two-day workshop\, we will discuss different genres and equipment needed to create a lasting legacy to share with family and friends.

Peter\, artist and scientist\, is the perfect mentor for outdoor painting; he understands so much about the land\, animals\, water and atmosphere and he shares all that he knows and loves with enthusiasm and spirit. We painted in the town\, at Bowron Lake\, summits on the road\, rivers and marshes\, and clouds in the sky. We honed our field studies in the studio. We worked hard and long and it seemed like play.” ~Louise Drescher\, Rossland\, BC \nParticipants will be given the option of staying in the new IMA residency multi-occupancy building “the Nest” or at any other accommodation provider in Wells. Each Artist will be provided with studio space\, as well as\, scheduled critiques\, demonstrations\, and ongoing hands-on work with Peter. \nPeter Corbett is considered by many to be one of western Canada’s leading plein air oil painters. Peter has been shown extensively in both public and commercial galleries\, been the recipient of numerous awards and has been a mentor and teacher in various capacities. He is also a professional biologist\, former outdoor adventure guide\, and loves to share his enthusiasm for nature while painting out-of-doors.

SUMMARY:Responsibility of the Storyteller Workshop with Janice Jo Lee
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 7 – Sunday\, March 8\, 2020\n10am – 12pm each day (2 hours a day) \nWorkshop Description\nWhy do you write? Why do you share? What is your purpose as an artist? Who is your community\, your audience\, and why do they matter to you? Why did your ancestors choose you as a storyteller? In this workshop we will examine and define our artistic practice within the context of our times and community. Artists will leave with a working draft of their artist statement\, and a clearer vision of their artistic path. \nRegistration in the workshop includes an evening concert with the incredible Janice Jo Lee on Saturday\, March 7 at 8pm in Wells. \nMarch in Wells is a great time for cross country skiing\, snow shoeing or visiting Barkerville with all its winter activities. Also 20 minutes down the road is Troll Ski Resort for great downhill skiing. \nStay at the Island Mountain Arts Nest Residency where you can choose from rooms with private bathroom or shared bathroom. All rooms have access to full kitchens\, as well as\, shared living rooms where you can socialize or continue to work on your storytelling. She is a folk soul singer-songwriter\, spoken word poet\, playwright-actor\, and educator. She is passionate about building flourishing communities based in justice and joy through art. On stage Janice is known for being disarmingly hilarious\, off-the-cuff and fearlessly honest. She is a hard femme\, queer\, radical\, comedian\, truth-teller and trickster. \nCurrently Janice organizes with Groundings\, a movement to raise up BIPOC poets under the mentorship of Lillian Allen. She is a Co-Chair of SpeakNORTH\, working to reinvision the national spoken word community. She was the founding artistic director of the Kitchener-Waterloo Poetry Slam and created its first Spoken Word Residency program for emerging professionals in 2018. Her one-woman musical satire Will You Be My Friend made its Toronto debut at Theatre Passe Muraille in 2018 (NNNN Now Magazine\, 3 of 4 Stars\, The Star) In Waterloo Region\, she was voted Best Performance Artist four years running from 2016 to 2019. She is working on her upcoming albums Ancestor Song\, Lonely is the Lullaby\, and a new bouffon musical satire about the climate apocalypse.
