SUMMARY:Exhibit: Lineage
DESCRIPTION:As an artist\, my upbringing\, heritage and family history have long served as inspirations for my work. Over the years\, these founding motivations have compounded\, evolved\, mutated and combined to form new pathways\, leading to new ideas. “Lineage\,” not only traces my family history and how it has come to affect my work\, but it also pinpoints the origins of thoughts and motifs that have recurred in my work since childhood. It charts the development of an artist\, the creative process and the transformation of ideas from the first seeds of curiosity to tangible works of art. – Haley Bassett \nThe show comprises 50-plus works\, spanning several mediums including oil paintings\, charcoal\, watercolor\, ceramics\, natural materials\, photographs and ink drawings. It includes works from Bassett’s early childhood\, as well as found objects\, references\, books\, personal belongings\, studies and notebooks. \nThe composition of these varied objects in the space provide a peek behind the curtain\, as it were\, to the process of creativity and inspiration\, highlighting the unstructured and unsuspecting ways that ideas form and build off of each other. Lineage runs counter to the narrative that artists exist in vacuums of lone genius\, and that their work resides only in a product of a painting. It provides an open and candid access point to the beauty of process\, not only as it relates to ancestry\, but in the way we develop\, hold to and understand our narratives of personal truth.\nIsland Mountain Arts is incredibly grateful to be hosting Lineage through our Summer season\, beginning June 30th with a gallery opening from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM. The gallery will be open Wednesday through Sunday until August 22nd. Indoor capacities will be in accordance with the guidelines from the PHO.

The conference includes a showcase of emerging and professional BC musicians to ensure more exposure\, promotion and support for BC talent. \nNorthern Exposure recognizes the unique opportunities and challenges faced by those who create\, produce or present music in rural settings and the conference aims to explore and address those opportunities and challenges. In rural BC distances are vast and those working in the music sector often face isolation and a lack of resources. Meeting face-to-face is a vital way to overcome this and build strength in the industry and more opportunities for working artists. \nNorthern Exposure’s dynamic and intimate model of information sharing creates a solid foundation for the development of a strong network amongst the arts professionals in attendance. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 7 – Sunday\, March 8\, 2020\n10am – 12pm each day (2 hours a day) \nWorkshop Description\nWhy do you write? Why do you share? What is your purpose as an artist? Who is your community\, your audience\, and why do they matter to you? Why did your ancestors choose you as a storyteller? In this workshop we will examine and define our artistic practice within the context of our times and community. Artists will leave with a working draft of their artist statement\, and a clearer vision of their artistic path. \nRegistration in the workshop includes an evening concert with the incredible Janice Jo Lee on Saturday\, March 7 at 8pm in Wells. \nMarch in Wells is a great time for cross country skiing\, snow shoeing or visiting Barkerville with all its winter activities. Also 20 minutes down the road is Troll Ski Resort for great downhill skiing. \nStay at the Island Mountain Arts Nest Residency where you can choose from rooms with private bathroom or shared bathroom. She is a folk soul singer-songwriter\, spoken word poet\, playwright-actor\, and educator. She is passionate about building flourishing communities based in justice and joy through art. On stage Janice is known for being disarmingly hilarious\, off-the-cuff and fearlessly honest. She is a hard femme\, queer\, radical\, comedian\, truth-teller and trickster. \nCurrently Janice organizes with Groundings\, a movement to raise up BIPOC poets under the mentorship of Lillian Allen. She is a Co-Chair of SpeakNORTH\, working to reinvision the national spoken word community. She was the founding artistic director of the Kitchener-Waterloo Poetry Slam and created its first Spoken Word Residency program for emerging professionals in 2018. Her one-woman musical satire Will You Be My Friend made its Toronto debut at Theatre Passe Muraille in 2018 (NNNN Now Magazine\, 3 of 4 Stars\, The Star) In Waterloo Region\, she was voted Best Performance Artist four years running from 2016 to 2019. She is working on her upcoming albums Ancestor Song\, Lonely is the Lullaby\, and a new bouffon musical satire about the climate apocalypse.

SUMMARY:Reading with George Elliott Clarke
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the IMA School for an artist talk with George Elliott Clarke\, by donation. \nThe tiny rural community of Weymouth Falls sits on the banks of the Sissiboo River in a far-flung southwestern corner of Nova Scotia. Best known as the birthplace of world-renowned boxing great Sam Langford\, the predominantly African Nova Scotian village also served as muse for Black Canadian writer George Elliott Clarke (born 1960)\, who channelled the spirit and vernacular of the community into the 1990 book-length poem\, Whylah Falls. \nThose who’d been paying attention four years earlier when Dr. Clarke was a master’s student in English at Dalhousie would have been given a glimpse into the genesis of the epic poem\, now regarded as a Canadian literary classic\, in the pages of the student newspaper. “Weymouth Falls\, founded in 1815 by Black Refugees\, is a village in Digby County\,” reads an introduction to a poem by Clarke in a December 1986 issue of the Dalhousie Gazette. “It is a snowy northern Mississippi\, with blood\, not on magnolias\, but on pines\, lilacs and wild roses. This homespun spiritual is one of its first songs.” \nDr. Clarke\, raised in Halifax\, had worked in Weymouth Falls and other rural communities like it as a social worker prior to returning to school at Dal in his mid-20s. (He had previously earned his BA at the University of Waterloo). He says the experience was an “incredible introduction to the beauty of African Nova Scotian . . . speech\, and the stories\, and the folklore\, and the songs” and instilled within him a desire to acknowledge the richness of the language in poetry. \nAt Dal\, Dr. Clarke began to develop the distinctive lyrical style that has come to characterize his body of work. Flip to the acknowledgements in any of his books and you’ll find the name John Fraser\, the Dal poetry professor Dr. Clarke credits for changing his academic career and making him a much better poet. \nDr. Clarke soon left Nova Scotia to do a PhD at Queen’s University and has worked as a professor at universities outside the province for much of his career\, including the University of Toronto and Duke University. While geographically removed from his home province\, his literary output has remained largely focussed on exploring the history and cultural geography of “Africadia” — a term he coined to refer to the often-marginalized communities in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick built by the descendants of Black Loyalists and African-American slaves. \nDr. Clarke has won praise for tackling issues such as racism\, oppression and change in his poetry\, and as Canada’s Parliamentary Poet Laureate (2016-17) and a member of the Orders of Canada and Nova Scotia — as well as a Dal honorary degree recipient — he gained a broader audience than ever. But even in the pages of the Gazette all those years ago\, you’ll find evidence that his would be a unique voice in the Canadian literary landscape\, chronicling untold stories of love and grief in verse.

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening & Artist Talk with Sarah Zimmerman
DESCRIPTION:Island Mountain Arts is excited to announce an exhibition launch on Friday July 19th\, 2019 at 7 pm featuring the work of Sarah Zimmerman (affectionately known by many as Saz)\, titled “The Fish Project”. \nThe exhibition will remain on view through Sunday\, August 25th\, 2019. \nSarah has been painting her entire life. Born and raised in Edmonton\, Alberta\, the urban arena has long played an important role in her life. Since moving to Terrace\, BC in 2000\, the incredible bounty of the Northwest has become a constant source of inspiration for her. From rooster portraits to vibrant snails\, her pieces are fun\, vibrant acrylic messes that are also a nod to her surroundings. Her work is a whimsical exploration of her environment and sense of place. \n“For me creating art is a way of expressing myself\, exploring my surroundings and combining complex ideas in a visual medium\,” Sarah says. “Art brings people and ideas together in a way that no other exercise can.” \nShe drew inspiration for this exhibition from the salmon and oolichan and their importance to the people of Northwestern BC\, exploring the intersection of fish\, culture and art. Sarah began the project in the Spring of 2017. Creating each piece was a multi-faceted process that involved sourcing or catching the fish\, cleaning it\, preparing it for printing\, painting it and then pressing the prints onto thin paper. Then the prints were transferred to the wood panels using a gel transfer technique. Each painting on its own is a reflection of a small\, but critical piece of the ecosystem. \nThe fish project includes a series of multimedia pieces that incorporate the old Japanese art of fish printing with a more modern gel transfer technique to transfer the prints of regionally harvest oolichan and salmon to wooden canvases. \nThe show also speaks to the relationship of fish to people\, both settler and Indigenous. Sarah has collaborated on a multimedia installation piece which is a nod to the oolichan fishery and how regional Indigenous people traditionally processed this incredible fish. In collaboration with Gitxsan/Nisga’a cedar weaver\, Jaimie Davis\, this piece is a reflection of the one-time abundance of this Indigenous fishery and the fragility of its stocks today. \nSarah has also collaborated with Sto:lo artist Amanda Hugon on a series of oolichan block prints that speak to the social\, ceremonial\, food and healing qualities of oolichan in a series of pieces called liquid gold. \nSarah is excited to share this project with folks visiting the IMA Gallery and ArtsWells festivalgoers. She says\, “Wells is one of those amazingly unique places that keeps drawing me back year after year\, be it for art\, learning\, escape or music. Wells holds a special place in my heart and has been an integral part of my artistic journey\, and because of that I am super excited to be showing the fish project at the Wells Gallery. It’s exciting for me to share this project not only with the wonderful people of Wells but those incredible creative souls that make their way to Wells each summer\, especially during ArtsWells.”

His practice has grown from landscape painting to sculpture\, performance and complex media installations. These are often an expression of where he finds himself and a utilization of what is at hand. Peter claims copyright on his land as an artwork. In the early 90s he started making boats of ice on bodies of water surrounding his studio and home now\, no longer possible due to the wildly fluctuating climate. His film Island explores the meaning and significance of the human compulsion to strive in the natural world despite its changing ecosystems. \nPeter has lived and worked in the boreal forest of northwestern Canada for most of his life\, where he pursues his interest in sustainability. Peter has exhibited across Canada\, in Europe and in the U.S. in public galleries and throughout the landscape. In 2016 he participated in “Watershed+ Embedded Artist”\, City of Calgary; Banff Centre Leighton Studio Residency; and led CO2 Residency in Demmitt\, AB. Peter received the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Distinguished Artist Award in 2015. In 2018 Peter’s solo exhibition\, “Songs for Pythagoras” at the Art Gallery of Alberta was accompanied by a significant hardcover publication with texts by Lucy Lippard\, Natasha Chaykowski and Ellie Epp.

She is the recipient of numerous awards including the 2016 Manitoba Arts Award of Distinction\, an Assistance to Visual Arts Long-term Grant from the Canada Council\, several Senior Arts Grants from the Manitoba Arts Council and a Fleck Fellowship from the Banff Centre for the Arts. \nThorneycroft taught as a sessional instructor at the University of Manitoba’s School of Art for 25 years. Since 2010 she has been focusing on her studio practice full time\, and has gallery representation in Canada\, the US and Europe. \nThorneycroft’s installation Black Forest (dark waters) had its inaugural opening at the Art Gallery of Southwestern\, Brandon\, Manitoba in June\, 2018\, and was recently shown at the Art Gallery of Burlington\, Burlington\, Ontario. Next spring\, it will open at La Maison de la Culture Frotenac\, Montreal and in January 2020 at and the Nickle Galleries\, Calgary\, Alberta. A smaller version of the installation entitled Black Forest (village)\, will be shown at the Vernon Art Gallery in the fall of 2019.

DESCRIPTION:The Toni Onley Artists’ Project is an opportunity for emerging and professional artists to step out of their own studio and into IMA’s shared studio space and work in an experimental\, exploratory and risk-taking manner. This is a juried program and artists must apply in order to be considered. A scholarship and bursary program is available for artists to attend the project (deadline May 1). Limited to a maximum of twenty participants working in any medium\, artists spend nine days in Wells\, BC working in the IMA studios under the mentorship of outstanding art practitioners of Diana Thorneycroft & Peter von Tiesenhausen. \nThis class capacity is only 20 students to offer a unique and intimate learning experience. This workshop for visual artist takes place in our historic town of Wells & we are offering affordable accommodations (from $40 per night) in our Artist-In-Residency building. DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to invite you to join Simone Buck for this two-day workshop\, which delves into creative expression through abstract watercolours. And the best part\, all levels are welcome! \n“Everybody has a creative side\, it is the inner critic and our own judgement and expectation that is keeping us from connecting to our inherent creative source. My goal is to bring this inner critic into consciousness\, acknowledge it but also letting go of it\, so that the participants can loosen up and tap into their true creative potential” said Simone Buck. \nBiography\nBorn in 1971 in Germany\, Simone holds a degree in Graphic/Communication Design from the University of Applied Sciences\, Mannheim\, and has worked as a graphic designer in the scientific publishing industry for many years. \nSimone first developed her love of painting when\, as a child moving between Germany and West Africa\, she discovered she could create her own worlds as the outside world changed.\nSimone frequently and comfortably switches between very luminescent\, light and dynamic modes of painting and an achromatic style accompanied by a reduced use of shapes. Her paintings are a blend of spontaneous brushwork paired with consciously applied painterly techniques.\nLiving a life close to the wilderness\, away from cities built up areas\, her art naturally tends to revolve around organic structures and energy states in nature. Most of the work is left untitled as she feels it important that the viewer approach her work with no added influence\, so that he/she may freely arrive at his/her own interpretations. \nThe workshop runs from 9am – 3:30pm with a break for lunch.

SUMMARY:Migration Parade: A Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This exploratory workshop welcomes all to participate. The workshop is free to the public thanks to support from the Canada Council for the Arts\, Arts Across Canada Public Outreach program. This exploratory workshop welcomes anyone over 16 to participate\, no materials needed! \nLimited spots available\, secure yours by emailing info@imarts.com or calling IMA at 250-994-3466. \nThis workshop moves away from teaching technical skills and instead aims to cultivate and deepen sensitivity as it applies to the arts. \nThe first half of the workshop will be mindfulness exercises done individually\, in partners and in the context of the larger group\, specifically relating to two aspects of embodiment: attuned listening and manual/haptic sensitivity (becoming attuned to the wisdom of our hands as it applies to art-making). \nThe second part of the workshop will be an application of our explorations in the form of ephemeral art pieces. The impetus for the pieces will come from ideas generated by the group itself. In this way\, we will build on the aesthetic themes we have been exploring up until that point. \nThis workshop features arts-based sequences\, somatics\, mindfulness techniques and playful experimentation/inquiry drawn from our respective studio practices\, with references and anchoring in the work on display in the IMA gallery space. \nExperience in the arts not a prerequisite. Open mind and curiosity a necessity.
