SUMMARY:Toni Onley Artist's Project
DESCRIPTION:The Toni Onley Artist Projects (TOAP)\, which focuses on the exploration and development of visual artists\, will have a maximum of 12 spaces available. \nThis year’s mentors are Cindy Mochizuki and Sandeep Johal! \nSaturday\, July 5th – Sunday\, July 13th\, 2025 at Wells\, BC \nLearn more about TOAP and its history – click here!~ \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Mentors\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\nSandeep Johal\, Photo Credit Rachel Pick \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSandeep Johal\nSandeep Johal is a Punjabi Canadian visual artist\, advocate\, and leader whose practice engages drawing\, collage\, textiles\, and large-scale murals. Through her Indo-folk feminine aesthetic\, she confronts themes of bleakness\, despair and ugliness with their dissonant opposites: brightness\, hope and beauty. Johal’s work typically centers around the stories of women and while she highlights female suffering in its many forms\, these are ultimately stories of resistance and resilience. \nJohal has worked on a number of notable site-specific commissions including a series of banners on Granville Street in partnership with Downtown Vancouver BIA (2024)\, a mural for the Vancouver Art Gallery’s inaugural #SpotlightVanArtRental project (2022)\, a digital projection mapping for Facade Festival produced by Burrard Arts Foundation (2019)\, and a 4\,000 sf collaborative mural project for Vancouver Mural Festival\, which centred around the Komagata Maru Episode and involved the de-naming of the federal building it was painted on (2019). Her work was part of the group exhibition In/Visible: Body as Reflective Site through the McClure Gallery and Visual Arts Centre in Montreal in partnership with the IMPACTS Project (2019). \nJohal’s clients include Apple\, the Vancouver Canucks\, Vancouver Whitecaps FC\, Estée Lauder Canada\, Holt Renfrew\, Lululemon\, and Earls Restaurant Group as well as the University of British Columbia’s Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies and Simon Fraser University’s Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue. She has been an artist-in-residence at Burrard Arts Foundation (2021) and Indian Summer Festival (2018) and is the 2019 recipient of the Darpan Magazine Artistic Visionary Award. Johal’s work is held in numerous collections\, including the TD Art Collection\, the Gordon Smith Gallery of Canadian Art\, Global Affairs Canada Visual Art Collection Program (Canadian Embassy\, San Salvador)\, and Surrey Art Gallery. \nJohal holds a Diploma in Fine Arts (honours) from Langara College (2007) and a Degree in Education from the University of British Columbia (2002). She lives and works in Vancouver\, BC\, Canada. \n\n\n\n\n\nVisit Sandeep’s Website\n\n\n\n\n\nCindy Mochizuki\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\nImage of Cindy Mochizuki\, submitted by artist \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCindy Mochizuki creates multi-media installation\, animation\, drawing\, audio fiction\, performance\, public artwork\, and community-engaged projects. She has exhibited her work in Canada\, US\, Australia\, and Japan. \nRecent exhibitions include the Art Gallery at Evergreen\, Kamloops Art Gallery\, Prince Takamado Gallery\, Nanaimo Art Gallery\, Surrey Art Gallery\, Vancouver Art Gallery\, Burrard Arts Foundation\, Frye Art Museum\, and Yonago City Museum. \nHer artistic projects integrate archival research\, oral histories and memory work and consider methodologies of gathering and re-telling stories that are often invisible\, excluded\, or undocumented.  A large body of her multi-media work explore the experiences of Japanese Canadians who were interned from the west coast of British Columbia during the second world war. Many of her animated films explore the lives of these first and second generations (isei and nisei) and their labour in the natural resource and food industries prior to their internment. \nShe received the Vancouver’s Mayor’s Arts Award in New Media and Film  (2015) and the Jack and Doris Shadbolt Foundation for the Visual Arts VIVA Award (2020). She has designed scenography\, illustration and animation for performing arts companies including Little Onion Puppet Co.\, Veronique West\, Rumble Theatre\, Theatre Replacement\, Dream Walker Dance Company\, Lisa Mariko Gelley\, Theatre Calgary and the Arts Club Theatre. She received her MFA from the School for Contemporary Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies.

SUMMARY:ArtsWells 2025
DESCRIPTION:📣🎉We are very excited to announce that we are going ahead with ArtsWells 2025! \nThis year\, the festival will take place on June 27 – 29.\nWe had worked hard to “bring back” the festival last year\, presenting a new iteration that we had carefully built and curated. \nHowever\, the postponement of ArtsWells 2024 due to fire strengthened our resolve to continue. We believe this community and this region deserve an event like ArtsWells\, something that celebrates the unique local spirit while inviting artists and listeners to our little town. We’re getting back on the horse and making it happen! \nWe believe these new dates will allow the festival to take place at time when the weather is comfortable in Wells. We would like to extend our gratitude to all the businesses and fellow NFPs in Wells and Barkerville that have helped us make this switch a reality.

SUMMARY:Fatamorgana
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE PLAY:\nFATAMORGANA is an oneiric tale for adults\, spoken in the language of children. Shadow puppetry and object theatre performance\, visual art experiment\, analog projection. Using flashlights\, prisms\, recycled objects\, paper marionettes\, and performers’ bodies\, the piece mirrors the mirage—ephemeral visions hovering between reality and imagination. Conjuring a silent\, hypnotic narrative about creation\, destruction\, and fragile beauty of life\, it takes the spectators on a journey through the birth and unraveling of worlds\, from the fusion of first atoms to the fragmentation of modern existence and back. \nABOUT THE COMPANY:\nFatamorgana is an independent theatre collective\, a group of Ukrainian and Polish itinerant artists\, culture animators and managers. Our project\, inspired by the need for beauty in theatre\, began seven years ago in Poland. It is the result of long-standing friendship\, years of creative collaboration\, and a shared curiosity. We explore drama\, puppetry\, shadow puppets and visual art\, object theatre and up-cycle theatre\, producing exclusively original performances. Our work is rooted in the alternative and independent theatre traditions of Poland. We believe that theatre is a form of social commentary\, and can be a catalyst for social transformation\, sparking dialogue and connection. We create not to entertain only but to provoke thought\, to offer moments of reflection\, to inspire change\, to inspire action. \nCAST:\nOleh Nesterov\, Nikon Miedviediev\, Paula Mac

SUMMARY:Sugarcane
DESCRIPTION:Join us this weekend as we kick of the Summer Solstice and National Indigenous People’s Day with the Oscar Nominated Documentary\, Sugarcane at 7PM tonight\, Saturday\, June 21st \nA stunning tribute to the resilience of Indigenous people and their way of life\, SUGARCANE\, the debut feature and Oscar-nominated documentary from Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie\, is an epic cinematic portrait of a community during a moment of international reckoning. In 2021\, evidence of unmarked graves was discovered on the grounds of an Indian residential school run by the Catholic Church in Canada. After years of silence\, the forced separation\, assimilation and abuse many children experienced at these segregated boarding schools was brought to light\, sparking a national outcry against a system designed to destroy Indigenous communities. Set amidst a groundbreaking investigation\, SUGARCANE illuminates the beauty of a community breaking cycles of intergenerational trauma and finding the strength to persevere. \n“Stunning in every sense of the word\, the new documentary film explores the lasting pain caused by a culture of silence in the Catholic church.” \n– Rohan Naahar\, The Indian Express \n“Sugarcane is as harrowing as it is vital. It’s a remarkably explicit consideration of intergenerational trauma that manages to center specific suffering without forgoing any aspects of the conditions that birthed such violence.” \n– Kyle Logan\, Chicago Reader

SUMMARY:Introduction to Lino Cut Reduction with Mary Anne Molcan
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is a beginner to intermediate level course for those who want to expand their one colour linocut experience to two or more colours. No prior printmaking experience is required. \nLearn about the reductive format of printmaking\, where participants work with one lino block to create a multi-coloured layered print edition. Prints are generally created with a colour pallet that ranges in value from light to darker hues. After each coloured layer is printed\, the block is carved to eliminate the latest colour from being reprinted. This process continues until the last colour remains and the block is destroyed. \nDue to the deterioration of the block through this method every carving decision is final and participants learn to work with unintended mark making. This process is fun and ensures that each print edition is truly one of a kind and impossible to replicate!\nParticipants are encouraged to come with source material or a drawing suitable for a 5 x 7 inch \nWhen?\nSaturday May 17th and Sunday May 18th\nIMA has inexpensive accommodation options for program participants through our artist-in-residence building check it out here -> www.imarts.com/island-mountain-air \nWhere?\nWells-Barkerville School (4386 Mildred Ave) Second Floor Studios\n4 hours/day \nCost?\n$185+GST for 2025 IMArts Members – Get Your Membership and support IMA Here!\n$200+GST for Non-Members \nRegistration?\n25% of the workshop fee will be due within 5 business days of registration and is non-refundable. IMA will draft and send an invoice to you via Square. We can take down-payment in the gallery in cash\, via e-transfer to finance@imarts.com or using a credit card online. The balance is due upon arrival at the workshop. \nThis workshop is supported by the BC Arts Council and the Province of British Columbia

SUMMARY:Reception and Artist Talk: Liquid Light
DESCRIPTION:Reception + Artist Talk: May 16\, 6PM! \nThe show will run from May 16th to June 15th so be sure to stop by and have a look at the art! \nIMA’s Gallery shows are supported by the Province of BC. Liquid light is additionally supported by the Wells-Barkerville Community Forest \nLight is fluid. It travels in a straight line at twice the speed of sound. It can reflect off objects and refract through others. It interferes\, disperses\, diffracts\, polarizes\, and creates shadow. These changeable qualities are what makes light fluid. Light also forms the biological basis of visual perception. The human visual system is geared toward understanding\, creating meaning and assigning value. My practice explores interactions between elements of the natural world and human values. \nMy work seeks to unearth subtleties beyond what the eye can see and focuses on the relationship between the abundance of living organisms and my own place within these ever evolving ecosystems. \nAs I created these prints\, I chose to highlight asymmetry and imperfections to draw a parallel to my human experiences. I also thought about the fragile nature and delicate balances of life cycles and how these same characteristics also speak to resiliency. Life continually captivates me with its duality and balanced interactions of competing and complementary forces. \nThe artworks in this series reflect my engagement with the forest and fauna of Vancouver Island\, coupled with a sense of reverence I feel when I notice the intelligence of the natural world.

The small town and supportive local food and business community in the Cariboo helped to incubate and grow Cocoaro from an idea to a business. In 2018\, Cocoaro moved to the lower mainland of BC as a result of family priorities. We have found a welcome food community and hope to grow the success of the chocolate and continue to educate people on fine craft chocolate. \nThe business grew out of Margaret’s passion for food\, flavour\, social justice and\, well\, chocolate. It was the intersection where she felt she could make a difference through the business she developed. She is continually learning and working on her craft. The business and bars also reflect her Japanese heritage\, including the gifting aspect of the culture. She hopes you not only enjoy them\, but you also share them\, which is why we make the bars beautiful on the outside and delicious on the inside. \nAll ages welcome. Youth 14 and under should be accompanied by an adult! Please contact info@imarts.com for any questions.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: Soba's Corner
DESCRIPTION:Soba’s Corner: A Chinese-Canadian Cooking Show\nArtist: Snack Witch Joni Cheung \nYouTube food channels are online spaces where diasporic communities go to connect with their heritage and stories by recreating foods that they grew up eating or have never tasted before. These platforms provide knowledge that can be easily disseminated between family and friends who physically can’t be together. In these worlds\, authors can speak to their connections to dishes they are teaching others to make. However\, some narratives need to be re-examined and chewed on. \nMotivated by her ancestors’ relationship to food and migration\, Soba’s Corner is a video series that unpacks distinct Chinese-Canadian dishes from specific provinces. Posted on YouTube and disguised as a typical how-to cooking show\, another conversation and narrative are hidden in the Canadian English closed captions and the “recipe” linked in the description box.
