SUMMARY:“My Art is Activism” - In conversation with Sid Chow Tan
DESCRIPTION:Island Mountain Arts is honoured to be hosting video documentarian\, community organizer\, and media producer Sid Chow Tan – along with a team of researchers/artists – in a residency through the beginning of August. Join us for a conversation on August 7th in the Island Mountain Arts Gallery as we delve into Sid’s prolific career\, inspired activism\, and community-centric approach to organizing and effecting change.\n\nSID CHOW TAN 周明輝 is perhaps best known for his anti-racism work\, community organizing\, and community-based media productions. Most significant is his highlighting the injustices of 62-years of racist Chinese head tax and exclusion legislation and its ongoing generational impacts. Working actively as a producer\, videographer\, teacher\, and organizer since 1986\, he is a founding director and member of the Community Media Education Society (https://www.vcn.bc.ca/cmes/1pages/about.htm)\, Head Tax Families Society of Canada (http://www.headtaxfamilies.ca/)\, and past President of Full Figure Theatre Company Society dba Full Figure Media and ACCESS Community Television (Facebook @ACCESSCOMMUNITYTV). Semi-retired\, he continues to reside in Vancouver’s Chinatown (100 block East Hastings) on the unceded and traditional territories of the Coast Salish peoples – sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) nations.\n\nHere is a photo of Sid Chow Tan with his heroes\, the late Charlie Quan and Gim Wong.\n(From left to right: Sid Chow Tan\, Charlie S. N. Quan\, and Gim Foon Wong.)\nPhoto by Eric Chan\n\nLocation: Island Mountain Arts Public Gallery (2323 Pooley St.)\n\nLight refreshments will be served!

SUMMARY:Kids Nature Camp: Wondrous World of Plants
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever seen a juicy berry while walking in the woods and wondered if you could eat it? This program will help you to discover the bounty of edible plants that thrive in the forest. Participants will learn about sustainable harvesting practices that ensure the health of the plants and foraging safety. Different activities will help participants learn the different plants in a fun manner that highlights the many benefits and help that plants provide us while maintaining the importance of respect for the different plants themselves. To further deepen our relationships with the plants that we learn about\, a guest artist will lead a workshop exploring how art is an important part of our toolkit when exploring the world around us. \nThis Camp will run from 9:00am-2:30pm each day \nThis program costs $30 valued at $10 per day. \nNature Camp Packing List
