SUMMARY:Unlock Your Family Story
DESCRIPTION:Is your family story locked in your accumulated documents and trees? Does your family ask for the stories? Then it’s time to pull it all together and publish that story! Participants engage in 14 hours of workshops and discussion facilitated by Brenda L Smith and Andrea Lister. \nTopics include: identifying the audience; choosing the right format; reviewing research\, putting words on the page; editing; legal necessities\, and assignments to get started. Working with their own materials\, and supporting each other\, participants discover how to move from gathering information to creating a publishable product. Participants will set goals for their research\, organize and evaluate their data\, and unlock their family story. \nIMA’s operational work is made possible through support from the Province of British Columbia\, The BC Arts Council\, and the Canada Council for the Arts.

SUMMARY:Community Meeting on the Future of the ArtsWells Festival
DESCRIPTION:We know that many of you are waiting to hear whether or not Island Mountain Arts (IMA) will bring ArtsWells back in the summer of 2023.Based on the results of the 2022 Community Feedback Survey and the IMA Board’s goals and vision\, we are planning a smaller version of the Festival\, to be presented in 2023 or 2024. We will announce the next Festival dates soon.\n\n\nOur goals are to present a Festival that includes the best parts of ArtsWells and eliminates\, to the best of our ability\, the elements that strained our community.\n\n\n· We hope you will read the Community Feedback Survey Results Summary: https://drive.google.com/…/1hRvjxi6YBnnd1lH1WVDTG…/view\n· IMA Board and Committees will continue to develop the Festival and other plans\, seek funding\, and collaborate with our partners for the future.\n· We encourage our neighbours to join us for a Community Meeting on February 8th at 7:00 PM in the Island Mountain Arts Public Gallery (2323 Pooley St.) where we will present our roadmap for the 2023 season and beyond. We look forward to hosting this conversation. (we unfortunately do not have the infrastructure to host this meeting in-person and online at this time.)\n\n\nIf you’re interested in volunteering with us to bring a future Festival or other programming to life\, please consider joining us on February 8th or contact volunteer@imarts.com for more details.\n\n\nBackground:\n\n\nFor many years\, Island Mountain Arts ran a summer festival in Wells called ArtsWells Festival Of All Things Art. Artists\, musicians\, and attendees came from near and far to celebrate what Wells had to offer.\n\n\nThe festival has not happened in person since the beginning of the covid pandemic. In its final years\, it had successfully grown so large that it began to put serious strain on the broader community and its infrastructure.

SUMMARY:“My Art is Activism” - In conversation with Sid Chow Tan
DESCRIPTION:Island Mountain Arts is honoured to be hosting video documentarian\, community organizer\, and media producer Sid Chow Tan – along with a team of researchers/artists – in a residency through the beginning of August. Join us for a conversation on August 7th in the Island Mountain Arts Gallery as we delve into Sid’s prolific career\, inspired activism\, and community-centric approach to organizing and effecting change.\n\nSID CHOW TAN 周明輝 is perhaps best known for his anti-racism work\, community organizing\, and community-based media productions. Most significant is his highlighting the injustices of 62-years of racist Chinese head tax and exclusion legislation and its ongoing generational impacts. Working actively as a producer\, videographer\, teacher\, and organizer since 1986\, he is a founding director and member of the Community Media Education Society (https://www.vcn.bc.ca/cmes/1pages/about.htm)\, Head Tax Families Society of Canada (http://www.headtaxfamilies.ca/)\, and past President of Full Figure Theatre Company Society dba Full Figure Media and ACCESS Community Television (Facebook @ACCESSCOMMUNITYTV). Semi-retired\, he continues to reside in Vancouver’s Chinatown (100 block East Hastings) on the unceded and traditional territories of the Coast Salish peoples – sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) nations.\n\nHere is a photo of Sid Chow Tan with his heroes\, the late Charlie Quan and Gim Wong.\n(From left to right: Sid Chow Tan\, Charlie S.
