SUMMARY:Paper Making Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Paper Making with MULCH Collective!\nFriday – May 31\, 2024 || 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM || fair weather = outside at the Nest\, foul weather in the Second Floor Studios (Wells-Barkerville School second floor). \nAre you swimming in a sea of documents? Is your wastepaper basket overflowing with balled up notes from your screenplay that just isn’t working? Do those junk mail flyers keep piling up before you get to use them? Join members of MULCH Collective down the rabbit hole of creating homemade paper from all that recycling\, scraps and plant materials laying around. Participants will learn the basics of paper making\, from building deckles to pulling sheets from the pulp. The workshop will also include an exploration into how local and invasive plant species can be used in the process of paper making.

SUMMARY:artist talk | tea and talk with Rachel Rozanski (ARCHIVAL EARTH)
DESCRIPTION:About 50 percent of Canada is permafrost\, and it’s thawing almost a century earlier than predicted. It is the foundation for Arctic ecosystems and in the last ten years\, thawing and “permafrost slumps” have started to dramatically change the landscape. \nThis multimedia exhibit explores the concept of time on a geological scale through land change in Northern Canada\, with a specific focus on the ways permafrost and water are being altered in the Anthropocene. Investigating permafrost thaw from the direct effects of small-scale mining to the results of large-scale global climate change\, this project developed through creative practice and collaboration with scientists and Indigenous land-based researchers in the Yukon and Northwest Territories on Inuvialuit\, Gwich’in\, Dene\, and Trondek Hwetch’in traditional territories\, partially through summer and winter residencies at the Klondike Institute of Art and Culture. \nAbout the Artist: Rachel Rozanski is an interdisciplinary artist and PhD student whose creative research explores concepts of restoration and repair in environmental studies and disability studies. Through residency projects in the Yukon\, Northwest Territories\, Nunavut and Iceland\, she has collaborated with researchers and been inspired by scientific and land-based studies of permafrost degradation\, pollution and adaptations for the Anthropocene. Using drawing\, photography and video\, Rachel portrays the creative survival of people\, plants and animals in sick bodies and sick Lands\, creating documentary art that is accessible and experiential. Her work has been exhibited in galleries internationally and across Canada including PAVED arts\, Prefix Circuit Gallery\, Two Rivers Gallery\, the Canada Council for the Arts Ajagemo gallery\, and Artspace Gallery for CONTACT Photography Festival. \nRegistration is not necessary\, but we hope you will join us!

SUMMARY:Soup's On! Happy 89th Birthday Wells Hotel
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free soup luncheon and open house Monday\, November 13th from 12 pm to 2 pm to mark the 89th birthday of the Wells Hotel.\nWhen the Cariboo Gold Quartz mine opened early in 1933\, a survey of the Townsite of Wells was done by Major E.J. Gook. The first two lots\, on the corner of Pooley Street and Sanders Avenue\, were sold by the Townsite Company to entrepreneur Paddy MacDonell who built the Wells Hotel on the site. \nThe Wells Hotel was completed late in the fall of 1934\, and a huge opening party was held at the hotel on the evening of November 13\, hosted by the owners\, Paddy and Mrs. MacDonell. For this special occasion the electric power supplied to the town was turned on for the first time. \nWhile the Wells Hotel has seen many changes in ownership and several renovations in its long history\, it continues to be a significant landmark in the town\, offering an air of stability and culture to the ever-changing socio-economic landscape of Wells. \nWe’re inviting the community to join us for a free hot bowl of soup to gather a mark another year in the history of the hotel.

SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening: Sensibilities of Place
DESCRIPTION:Sensibilities of Place is a conversation between self and place. An exploration of relationships between the environment\, systems\, people\, and those houses within. Conversations that connect the material with the abstract\, and the observed and the direct. The work manifest through bearing witness and being witnessed. These notions culminate physically in text and textiles.  The installation is an invitation to meander. \nThe artist will be in Wells creating site specific components prior to the opening on August 31st.

SUMMARY:Alex Flett One-Man-Band and the Flett & Goldthorpe Duet
DESCRIPTION:No cover charge. Tips for the artist gratefully accepted. \nAlex Flett is a one-man-band experience. He plays the harmonica\, guitar\, cajon\, tambourine and hi-hat all at the same time\, while singing his original poetry. Although only being one person\, the way he plays can pack a punch like a full band. His music tells honest\, from-the-heart stories drawn from his journey through life. \nWhen a one-man-band meets a one-woman-powerhouse-mystic\, magic is born. Alex Flett and Cara Goldthorpe are a husband and wife musical duo with roots across the globe. They combine their soft and hard playing styles to create balanced songs with many elements\, a dance of yin and yang\, drawing inspiration from their diverse life experiences and traditions. \nhttps://thesundragon.com/

SUMMARY:Luminosity Gallery Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the IMA Public Gallery between 11 AM and 6 PM from July 8th – 15th (Closed Monday and Tuesday) to participate in this unique multimedia exhibition\, and again at 5:30 PM on July 15th for the culminating showcase. \nIn Luminosity\, the artworks of visual artist Linda Dayan Frimer and video artist Isaac Forsland are showcased together\, exploring the interaction between painted pieces and projections. Together\, the works unveil the artists’ vivid hues and abstract elements\, highlighting the role creativity has in the relationship between humanity and nature.\nDuring the run of the exhibition\, the public is invited to participate in the creative process of ‘Direct Animation’\, contributing their own drawings\, impressions\, and linework onto a clear strip of film as they explore the gallery. \nOver the course of the exhibition\, this community-made artwork will evolve\, culminating in a late afternoon tea + talk that will feature a book reading of Luminous with Frimer\, followed by a film screening to conclude the exhibition. \nLINDA DAYAN FRIMER:\nBorn and raised in the forests of the Wells-Barkerville area\, Frimer finds inspiration in local surroundings\, particularly trees\, transcending the confines of the natural world and giving rise to dynamic\, lively forests. Her newest book\, Luminous: An Artist’s Story as a Guide to Radical Creativity\, posits that as the artists of our own stories\, we actively cultivate our imagination and our experiences of colour and form. Through knowledge of past artists\, who were able to see more in the darkness of their times while visualizing the future\, Frimer encourages us to be inspired to bring something new\, creative and unifying into existence. \nISAAC FORSLAND:\nForsland explores the creative process itself\, with a strong emphasis on the time and effort invested behind the scenes of film production. While recognizing the importance of the final result\, the focus in this show primarily rests on understanding the intricate journey of bringing a piece of film to life. \nIMA acknowledges the support of the Canada Council for the Arts and the Province of British Columbia\, as well as the Wells-Barkerville Community Forest\, for keeping our gallery free to attend.\nIMA acknowledges the ancestral territories of the Secwépemc and Dakelh Nations\, on which Luminosity will be presented\, recognizing their historical and ongoing connection to the land.
