SUMMARY:Island Mountain Harp and Cello School: Friday Night Concert with Dave and Shoshanna
DESCRIPTION:Cap off our week-long historic Harp + Cello School (36 years!) with this early evening concert featuring Prince George’s Shoshanna Godber! Shoshanna’s concert will include sorrowful Scottish airs\, cheerful Irish jigs\, originals and even a pop song for good measure! Shoshanna will be joined by partner in music and life\, Dave Godber on guitar and Irish whistle.\n\nABOUT SHOSHANNA:\nShoshanna Godber is a Canadian harpist\, singer\, pianist and banjo player. She began her musical education with classical violin\, piano and voice but was always drawn to her mother’s Celtic music records. She started playing the harp while completing her Bachelor of Music at the University of British Columbia\, and it very quickly eclipsed all of her other musical interests. Her repertoire has expanded from Celtic to traditional folk from all over the world\, classical and contemporary compositions. She is a diverse performer and enjoys giving concerts of traditional and contemporary music with her guitarist (and husband) Dave Godber. She also performs regularly with Alban Classical and with her colleagues for the Prince George Conservatory of Music’s chamber concert series. Shoshanna has recorded three albums of children’s folk music and has contributed to other artist’s projects as a session musician. Her catalogue of sheet music on Harp Column and her website is steadily increasing with her arrangements for harp and voice\, harp ensemble and solo harp. Since 2012 Shoshanna has taught harp and directed a harp ensemble at the Conservatory and loves empowering her students to achieve their harp dreams. Shoshanna loved being the Novice Harp instructor at the IMA Harp School last year and is looking forward to connecting with harpists in person this summer.\nhttps://www.shoshannagodber.com\nhttps://www.youtube.com/c/ShoshannaGodber\n\nLOCATION\nThe Sunset Theatre\, Wells\, BC AND Online\n\nTICKETS\nThis event is a part of the Island Mountain Arts Harp + Cello School and is pay what you can. We ask that folks register ahead of time as space is limited.\nYou can grab a ticket in advance here: https://island-mountain-arts.square.site\n\nThis concert will be approximately one hour in length and will take place Friday\, August 19th\, 2022 at 6:00 PM.\n\nThis event is made possible through funding from the Department of Canadian Heritage\, The province of British Columbia\, The BC Arts Council and Creative BC

SUMMARY:Yael Wand in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Opening Act: Bob Campbell • Local Yocal \nWe are thrilled to have the very talented Yael Wand back on the Sunset Stage after quite a few years. She just released her 4th album\, Saltwater Heartwood\, and she’ll be touring BC this summer. We are very lucky too have her add Wells to her tour dates. \nAbout Yael: \nAfter a hiatus of a decade or so\, Yael is ready to bring her music back to the spotlight. A lot happens over a decade in the life of songwriter and singer. A lot can change – children\, home\, creative focus – and yet the keen senses of the songwriter are always there\, paying attention from below the surface of daily life. \nYael never purposefully put away her songwriting tools. But raising children\, tending gardens\, contributing to community\, settling in a new town – these all have a way of circumventing the needs of the craft\, while growing a full life. And despite all those distractions\, which have tended to take precedence\, Yael found occasional moments to write\, documenting chapters and stories of a life unfolding. \nSaltwater Heartwood (07.22.21) is Yael’s fourth album with the talented Corwin Fox in his Hidden Well Studio. It’s a paired down production that showcases her gorgeous voice and the maturity of her songwriting. Yael plays guitar\, ukulele and accordion\, with Alan Kerr on upright bass\, long-time collaborator Christina Zaenker lending her cello and voice\, and Corwin himself contributing his trademark magic touches on guitars and sundry.

SUMMARY:Spring s'Wells | May Melt Away
DESCRIPTION:The return of hummingbirds. The lengthening of the days. In May\, the dregs of winter begin to melt away.\n\nWe hope you’ll join Island Mountain Arts\, the Sunset Theatre and SARRAS (located in the former ‘The Amazing Space’ Gallery) on May 20th for an event that may just melt your heart. Spring s’Wells: May Melt Away\, sees the audience split into groups\, moving between three Wells venues\, making up one evening of supporting independent Canadian music from friends old and new. Bring your kind listening ears and your grooving shoes for this one!\nFor this event\, patrons will move between 3 performance venues\, taking in the fresh air of the night in between each of the sets. If mobility is a concern\, please get in contact with Elyssia Sasaki. (info@imarts.com).\n\nGenevieve Jaide is a northern blooded songstress with stories to tell. These stories will leave your foot tapping\, face smirking\, and transcend you into a state of almost awkward bliss. Her booming sweet jazzy voice captivates the audience and brings the room to a state of presence that is rare to witness. Her songs are lyrically heavy\, brutally honest and uncomfortably vulnerable\, you won’t want to miss a word. For this set\, she’s joined by Brock Patch.\nhttps://www.genevievejaide.com/\nSail Cassady came alive while reading ‘on the road’ by Jack Kerouac in 2012. The adventure\, art and imagery held within the parameters of a single book birthed the idea that the same concept could be experienced within a song or a band. Signed to Surkeus Records 2021\, watch out for Sail Cassady’s next record in late Summer 2022.\nhttps://sailcassady.bandcamp.com/\n\nSt. Arnaud is a little bit of everywhere to everyone. Working alongside his brother and fellow creative\, the YouTube animator GingerPale\, St.Arnaud found a loving home on YouTube and Spotify with legions of eager listeners and was swept up in dozens of tour dates across Canada\, Europe\, and the USA. His debut album was a DIY tour-de-force of fun-loving melodies overlaying themes of death\, loss\, and anxiety. His new album\, 2022’s Love and the Front Lawn continues the sad lyrics/happy melodies framework with flavours of off-the-wall rockers Jonathan Richman and The Modern Lovers\, Kevin Morby\, and Andy Shauf.\nhttps://www.starnaudband.com/\n\nThe event begins promptly at the Sunset Theatre at 7:00 PM – Doors are at 6:30 PM- get there early! Tickets are on sale now\, ranging in cost from $15.00 – $30.00. You can find them online at www.imarts.com under “Online Shop & Tickets.”\n\nIsland Mountain Arts is committed to following Provincial Health orders and Northern Health’s guidelines when it comes to facilitating events through the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. As of April 8th\, 2022\, vaccine passports will not be required for our events.\n\nAt this time\, we encourage event participants to don masks as personal protective equipment while participating in our events.\nIsland Mountain Arts will continue to monitor and abide by protocols set out by the Government of BC.

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL Island Mountain Harp and Cello School
DESCRIPTION:Now in its 35th year\, the Island Mountain Harp and Cello school brings World-class instructors together with students of all abilities for 5 days. Days are comprised of morning lessons\, afternoon special interest sessions and evening performances\, with time for coffee and catch-up throughout! We hope you’ll join us! \n\n\nMORNING INSTRUCTION | NOVICE / INTERMEDIATE / ADVANCED HARP; CELLO (ALL LEVELS)\n\n\n\n\nMaximum class size of 12.\nNOVICE HARP WITH SHOSHANNA GODBER\nPractice Strategies – making the most out of your practice time is a skill that needs to be learned alongside any instrument. Shoshanna will share her favourite strategies for learning and getting ready to perform your pieces. \nTechnique – we’ll work on developing a relaxed technique in order play pain-free and with the best tone possible. \nCreativity – with the right tools improvisation turns from being scary to opening up a whole new way to fall in love with the harp. Shoshanna will share her improvisation toolbox to help you make your own music no matter your reading or playing level. \n\n“The novice class will consist of three main topics. Every day we will spend time warming up and working on developing proper technique. I will go over fundamentals such as how to sit at the harp to avoid injury\, developing a relaxed hand position\, best placement of fingers on the strings and proper follow through into the palm. After the warm-up/technique time we will work on learning repertoire. The amount of pieces will be determined by the participants’ playing level. Through these pieces we will work on practice strategies such as analyzing the piece for patterns\, placing all fingers in a bracket\, dividing the piece into easily learned chunks (even if that is only one bar at a time) and how to coordinate playing hands together. Towards the end of the week we will switch from practicing to learn a piece to strategies to prepare to perform a piece. I will provide recordings of the pieces to aid students in learning the pieces regardless of their note reading ability. Lastly\, I will introduce improvisation strategies to help students develop the ability to work creatively on the harp. Strategies will include descending bass lines\, pentatonic tuning and a simple repeated chord progression. I will provide students with backing tracks so that they can continue to work on these strategies on their own.” – Shoshanna Godber \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nINTERMEDIATE HARP WITH SHARLENE WALLACE\nInspiration. Fluidity. Repertoire. Technique. Beauty. Fun. \nThe Intermediate level harp class will encompass how to play and what to play as well as how to practice! The class will learn new tunes\, left-hand accompaniments\, exercises and arranging ideas while incorporating relaxation\, technical ease\, pattern recognition\, beauty tone\, expressive playing\, improvisation and… other virtually mountainous inspirations! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nADVANCE HARP WITH TRISTAN LE GOVIC\nIn 1971\, the Breton harper Alan Stivell released history most famous album “Renaissance of the Celtic Harp”. This album had a fantastic echo within the Celtic world and for the development of the Celtic harp. \nCelebrating this 50th anniversary\, Tristan will teach some of the tunes of this ground-breaking album in this workshop and talk a bit about the harp in Brittany that led to the album. This will be a great opportunity to understand the variety of styles from the Celtic countries\, from Brittany\, Ireland\, Scotland\, Wales or Manx. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCELLO WITH MORAG NORTHEY\n\n“I look forward to working with every beautiful cellist that walks through my online and my studio door!”  <3 Morag \n\nThis workshop will be tailored to the participant’s level of achievement. Beginners to experienced are welcome. \nEach session will begin with warm-ups to unlock and balance the body\, free vibrations\, and provide ease\, accuracy and direction. Cellists will dive into technique\, studies and pieces. \nMorag offers a very rewarding and memorable approach to furthering your love of the cello. \nA teacher for 40 years\, Northey adheres to the technical demands of classical music while inspiring cellist of all ages and stages from rudimentary skills to successful entrance in the profession. She has trained in the Suzuki and Kodály methods\, taught at the Calgary Suzuki Talent Education Society\, consistently leads group and ensemble classes for early childhood\, teen and adult levels\, and creates and runs a series of unique\, multi-age\, multi-level\, all-encompassing intensive string summer cello camps from her home and with the Island Mountain Arts! \nAfternoon Special Interest Class\nEvery afternoon\, we’ll gather together for a special interest class\, led by one of our brilliant instructors (and some very special guests! ) Dates TBD!\nARRANGING WITH SHOSHANNA GODBER\nHave you ever given up learning a song because you couldn’t find an appropriate arrangement? In this workshop\, Shoshanna will give you the tools to make sure that never has to happen to you again regardless of your playing ability! She’ll share music theory essentials which makes creating your own arrangements easier to tackle\, ideas for left accompaniment\, and how to develop introductions and outros. \nTHE HARMONIC SERIES AS THE MASTER TEACHER WITH MORAG NORTHEY\nExplore one of the great universal laws in a Masterclass with Morag Northey. Connect\, recharge and refocus while discovering ways to advance your playing through harmonics\, energy flow and sound waves. \nMISTRESSCLASS WITH SHARLENE WALLACE\nLimited participants / unlimited auditors! \nPlay one of your pieces or compositions or an exercise for Sharlene and receive encouraging and helpful thoughts… or just bring a question! \n\n“The idea of a mistressclass (masterclass) is for a student to play a piece a scale or even to present a question… and I respond. Like in a private lesson. Everyone else is an auditor to listen to the suggestions in a relaxed way because they are not on the hot seat!” \n\nThis format is a way to have an opportunity to get feedback (from Sharlene) about pieces or exercises or compositions that you are working on… for musical ideas\, or ways to make something easier\, or just to check in to see if what you are doing is working… or whatever you want to ask Shar about!!! \nEvening Concerts\nMORAG NORTHEY\nAs part of IMA’s Virtual Harp & Cello School\, Morag with Pianist Mary Buckley\, will perform an evening of works from David Popper’s ‘Im Walde’ Suite’ Op. 50. The suite reflects what it means to enter\, encounter\, revere and return home from the forest. She will play the ‘Adagio with Variations’ by Ottorino Respighi and will present her ‘Homage for Mother Earth.’ \nSHOSHANNA GODBER\nSHARLENE WALLACE\nTRISTAN LE GOVIC

Scholarships and bursaries are also available. \nInstructors: Sunita Staneslow\, Seumas Gagne\, Sharlene Wallace\, Marilyn Rummel\, Morag Northey and special guest Tristan LeGovic. \nWhat Does a Virtual Harp & Cello School Look Like?\nRegistrants will do a live on-line two-hour interactive class each morning (Monday to Friday\, 9:30am – 12pm) with their instructor and their harp or cello\, there will be one “special topics” session each day with one of the instructors (mostly a listening class)\, and then a short concert every evening at 5pm featuring an instructor\, with a couple of ceilidh style student performances to begin. We’ll try to be our usual informal\, supportive style retreat\, and try to meet needs of all our participants as best we can. \nThe classes will be 2 hours\, with a 1/2 break in between – where coffee and talking will reign – there should be few enough students in each that we can somewhat chat with each other – we know that so much of the pleasure of coming to Wells is meeting your old harp & cello friends every year! \nSharlene Wallace (Novice/Advanced Beginner)\, Seumas Gagné (Intermediate)\, Sunita Staneslow (Intermediate/Advanced) and Morag Northey (All Levels Cello) will be teaching the morning workshops. And while Sharlene’s class is not for complete beginners\, they are welcome IF they take the Harp Start class the week before. It will be offered at no additional cost to registrants for the Novice class. Marilyn Rummel\, Island Mountain’s Harp School Founder and Artistic Director\, will be offering that. Please get in touch for more information (info@imarts.com). \nWe’ll all join together for the special topics in the afternoon 2 – 3pm\, and for the concerts at 5pm. \nWe are happy to say that Tristan Le Govic will be playing one of the instructor concert nights\, and have a special topic as well all the way from France! \nPlan for a virtual ‘Welcome Reception’ at 5pm PST on Sunday\, August 16 to make sure you have all the information and technical know how to make your week a great experience! \nAll the classes will be done by Zoom\, and registrants will get the info they need well in advance. \nRegistration Information\nEarly Bird Rate (includes workshops\, special topics and evening concerts):\n$355 + GST (Must Register and Pay in Full by July 24)\nRegular Fee:\n$395 + GST (After July 24\, 2020) \nWant to just attend the afternoon special topics and the evening concerts?:\n$200 + GST \nScholarships and bursaries are available. Application deadline is two weeks before the program\, but classes do sell out\, so apply early.
