SUMMARY:Songwriting & Rhythm for Ages 6 - 18
DESCRIPTION:This course focuses on both writing and performance aimed at facilitating self-expression through music\, song and spoken word poetry. Combining elements of musical theory\, improvisation techniques\, lyric writing\, collaboration with peers and working one-on-one with the instructors\, students get and incredibly dynamic and transformational experience. This program is suitable for complete beginners\, as well as students with prior musical experience. Corwin brings his mobile recording studio to give students an opportunity to record their new tunes and have a CD to take home with them. Students perform their new songs at the ArtsWells Festival. Having taught this course at IMA for over ten years\, professional BC musician Corwin Fox has developed an incredible program that has been life-changing for many of the young people who have taken part.

DESCRIPTION:An Intro to Roots Guitar Workshop with Doug Cox (Americana\, Country\, Blues\, Bluegrass and Beyond). \nDoug Cox will be teaching his ‘Intro to Roots Guitar’ Class that features loads of fun learning techniques and skills on the acoustic guitar. Topics we will touch on will include;\n– 5 things you can do with your right hand (this includes intros to flat-picking\, bass thumping\, alternate thumb\, brush stroke & string grabbing. We will be learning at least one song that features each of these techniques)\n– Intro to Open Tunings\n– Intro to Slide Guitar\n– Ear Training\n– Chord Shapes & Theory\n– Rhythm Guitar\n– Understanding the Guitar Neck\n– Intro to Melodic lead playing.\nThe focus of this class will be to have a good time while learning more about roots music and your musical self. Less talking and more playing! Students should be able to play through their basic chords fast enough to get through a song in order to be comfortable.

Show starts at 8pm. \n“First there was The Beats\, then Hunter S. Thompson\, now there’s C.R. Avery.” Kruger Magazine (UK) \nC.R. Avery was born in Smith Falls\, Ontario in 1976. He has released seventeen albums\, written and directed\nthree musicals that have been produced in New York\, L.A\, Seattle and San Francisco. Avery has toured ruthlessly throughout North America\, Europe\, and Australia with his rock & roll punk ensembles\, hip-hop circus’s with 12-bar blues high kicks\, and his infamous string quartets and burlesque revues. Some Birds Walk for the Hell of It is his third book of poetry. He presently resides in East Vancouver’s Little Italy neighbourhood where he just wrote and directed his first full length feature film “Victory on East Hastings.”
