SUMMARY:Martha Ritchie: Boreal Relief
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Hours Wed – Sunday 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM \nBoreal Relief is a collection of linocut prints based on images drawn from the forest that surrounds my home and studio in the Yukon. \nWhat started as prints on paper have evolved into three-dimensional paper sculptures and wearable prints on clothing. The sculptures and clothing items echo the images of boreal flora and fauna found in the wall art\, creating a sense of being present in the natural environment. \nThe work in this collection is both a celebration of the beauty and tranquility of the boreal forest as well as an expression of a desire to blend into nature. \nIn our world\, there has been an increasing disconnection from the natural environment\, but recently there is a growing desire to reconnect with nature for reflection\, relaxation and healing. The past two years have heightened this longing for a peaceful escape. Spending time in the Boreal forest is a gift that can provide this relief. \nMartha Ritchie \nMartha Jane Ritchie is an Artist and Printmaker who lives in Haines Junction\, Yukon Territory\, Canada with her husband and two sons. \nWhile attending Emily Carr College of Art\, Martha majored in printmaking and discovered Linocuts. She graduated with honours and continued working in the medium for the next 30 years. \nHer current work is drawn from the natural environment that surrounds her home in Haines Junction\, Yukon. \nwww.martharitchie.com

SUMMARY:Forest Relief Fabric Printing and Painting Workshop w/ Martha Jane Ritchie
DESCRIPTION:Join Martha Jane Ritchie for this two-day workshop June 25th and June 26th 2022. In this workshop\, we will draw our inspiration from the forest as we design and carve a unique printing block for textiles. Participants will apply their relief printing block to fabric and enhance the image with hand painting.\nThis is a fun way to repurpose tired clothes or find a new purpose for old textiles. Although\, synthetic fibres work with this process\, natural plant based fabrics such as linen and cotton give the best results. The fabric must be able to handle direct heat by an iron.\n\nParticipants should bring at least one item to work on\, such as a shirt\, skirt\, tablecloth\, napkins or piece of fabric. It is a good idea to bring an extra piece for back up. Also\, an in-phone camera is helpful and a favourite sketch book and pencil if you have one\, although options will be provided.\n\nThe workshop runs from 11:00am – 3:00pm both days\, with a breaks as determined by the Artist\, and includes access to the studio between instructional times!\n\nEarly Bird Fees to June 10th\, 2022! $90 (Supplies Inc.) + GST\n($22.50 – Early Bird Deposit)\n\nRegular Fees:$120 (Supplies Inc.) + GST\n\nPlease note that the class will run with minimum of 3 participants.\n\nOvernight accommodation options are available for added fees. Message residence@imarts.com for more details.\n\nYou can call our office from 11 – 6 Wed – Sun (250 994 3466) if you encounter any issues through the registration process

She created SharGloMa Soapworks when she realized her “hobby” had turned into an obsession and she had more soap than she could use in a lifetime.\nSharGloMa is originally from Victoria\, BC – but Gloria and her husband Randy realized that the Cariboo was the best place in Canada and they relocated to south Quesnel in September 2021. They have been making soap for the Quesnel Farmers Market and Edgewood Farms (their first wholesale outlet) and enjoying everything the Cariboo has to offer.\n\nSoapmaking is an art that has been bringing people together for centuries. Similar to quilting bees\, pioneers had soapmaking days where many people would get together to make soap for the community. Gloria believes that there is nothing better than using handmade soap and loves teaching those who are interested in how to make their own. She also loves researching beneficial plants that can be used in soapmaking and is looking forward to learning more about the foraging opportunities in the Cariboo.\n\nThis workshop costs $30.00 which covers the materials used.\nReserve your spot here (you can only book one space at a time):\nhttps://islandmountainarts.as.me/soap-making-101

SUMMARY:Yael Wand in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Opening Act: Bob Campbell • Local Yocal \nWe are thrilled to have the very talented Yael Wand back on the Sunset Stage after quite a few years. She just released her 4th album\, Saltwater Heartwood\, and she’ll be touring BC this summer. We are very lucky too have her add Wells to her tour dates. \nAbout Yael: \nAfter a hiatus of a decade or so\, Yael is ready to bring her music back to the spotlight. A lot happens over a decade in the life of songwriter and singer. A lot can change – children\, home\, creative focus – and yet the keen senses of the songwriter are always there\, paying attention from below the surface of daily life. \nYael never purposefully put away her songwriting tools. But raising children\, tending gardens\, contributing to community\, settling in a new town – these all have a way of circumventing the needs of the craft\, while growing a full life. And despite all those distractions\, which have tended to take precedence\, Yael found occasional moments to write\, documenting chapters and stories of a life unfolding. \nSaltwater Heartwood (07.22.21) is Yael’s fourth album with the talented Corwin Fox in his Hidden Well Studio. It’s a paired down production that showcases her gorgeous voice and the maturity of her songwriting. Yael plays guitar\, ukulele and accordion\, with Alan Kerr on upright bass\, long-time collaborator Christina Zaenker lending her cello and voice\, and Corwin himself contributing his trademark magic touches on guitars and sundry.

SUMMARY:Evening Bat Excursion
DESCRIPTION:From Superhero origins to bloodsucking shapeshifters and attic nuisances\, bats can be regarded in many different lights. In this workshop come learn why bats are truly spectacular and often misunderstood creatures. Bat researcher Brett Gandy will take us on an evening bat exploration to see and listen to the bats who make the forest their home. Come discover why Brett is so passionate about bats and gain a new appreciation for the little flying mammals. If you feel 11:30 is super late to end\, no worries\, you can come for a short while or stick it out to the very end .\n\nBrett is an incoming Master’s student at UNBC in their Natural Resource and Environmental Science Program\, to be supervised by Dr. Erin Baerwald. His research has aimed to better understand how bats use and select their habitat\, and how this can relate to selecting sites for both further research and conservation of our bat species. Brett is currently working in the Wells-Barkerville Community Forest this summer on an acoustic monitoring project that aims to determine which species of bats call Wells home\, as well as gaining insight into how these bats are using the different habitats that the community forest has to offer.\n\nThis workshop is PWYC. SUMMARY:Shield Maiden
DESCRIPTION:WRITTEN AND PERFORMED BY MELANIE TEICHROEB \nDIRECTED BY NICOLLE NATTRASS \nSTAGE/ROAD MANAGER – SANDY CUMBERLAND \n\n “More than a millennium ago in what’s now southeastern Sweden\, a wealthy Viking warrior was laid to rest\, in a resplendent grave filled with swords\, arrowheads\, and two sacrificed horses. The site reflected the ideal of Viking male warrior life\, or so many archaeologists had thought. New DNA analyses of the bones\, however\, confirm a revelatory find: the grave belonged to a woman.” \nFunny. Sexy. Fierce. Unapologetic! Travel back to tenth century Sweden for a Norse RED Talk. Think TED Talks with a Viking twist. Viking warrior\, Ingrid\, worked hard to get where she is\, but it’s lonely at the top. She’s looking for the courageous and honourable to join her. You know\, folks who know how to have fun and don’t mind the notion of a little death. This warrior is battle hardened but cracks in her emotional armour reveal a struggle with forces beyond her control. Rage\, sexuality\, equality\, grief and trauma are addressed with humour\, irreverence and compassion. SHIELD MAIDEN represents the archetypal version of female strength modern women are looking for in themselves. It also invites men to be allies in the battle for equality. \n“Ingrid the Warrior arrived at our festival fully-formed and ready to kick ass. Shield Maiden sparks conversations about gender equality\, feminine empowerment\, and the #metoo movement – with a flamethrower. I’ve never seen a theatre crowd leave a show so charged up.
“ \n– Mitch Miyagawa\, Producer\, Cultivate Festival \n“Shield Maiden by Melanie Teichroeb is a fierce and funny mashup of vikings and a Tony Robbins workshop\, and was truly one of the highlights this year of our 26th annual fringe festival\, Fronterafest. Not only is it a great script\, but Melanie’s performance was just incredible.” \n– Ken Webster\, Artistic Director\, Hyde Park Theatre
