SUMMARY:The Blue Taffeta Party Dress and Other Stories
DESCRIPTION:Join us for The Blue Tafetta Party Dress on July 2nd\, 3rd and 4th @ 8PM.\nRunning Time: 70 Minutes\, 2 Acts (each act is 35 to 40 minutes) One 15 minute intermission. \n“This play packs a queer historical punch while still maintaining humour and wit. An eloquent one-person drama that keeps you wondering what’s around each theatrical corner.” – James Chamberlain\, Nanaimo\, BC\, Founding Member of GALE (Gay & Lesbian Educators) \nOn July 2\, 3 and 4\, 2026 the Sunset Theatre in Wells is proud to present a very personal coming of age story created by a Quesnel born writer\, performer and retired teacher/principal. \nThe Blue Taffeta Party Dress & Other Stories is a solo performance written and performed by Dennis Hawkins-Bogle\, and tells the story of one man’s coming of age journey from childhood to his life as the principal of the high school he graduated from. \nABOUT THE PLAY \nSet in a small northern town in the 1970s\, this is more than a coming out story. It’s a raw\, honest\, and often wry journey through the psyche\, the politics\, and the pressures of a time that had little room for difference. Playwright and Performer\, Dennis Hawkins-Bogle shares\, “As a gay kid growing up in an era of silence and shame\, my voice was misrepresented\, undermined\, even sensationalized by the dominant culture. Now\, I’m setting the story straight — through moments of resilience\, humour\, heartbreak\, and hope. This is a story about choosing authenticity over fear\, joy over judgment\, and community over isolation. It’s not just about coming out. It’s about coming into a life fully lived.” \nDirected by Campbell River resident\, Heather Gordon Murphy\, Dennis’ play is a collection of autobiographical stories about coming of age in an era of silence and shame. \nThe Blue Taffeta Dress & Other Stories will be presented at the Sunset Theatre in Wells for three nights: Thursday\, July 2nd through to Saturday\, July 4th. The play runs 70 minutes in 2 Acts with one 15 minute intermission. This show contains mature content is suited for an audience over the age of 16 years old. \nAbout the Playwright / Performer \nDennis Hawkins-Bogle (last at the Sunset in 2024\, with Where is Grise Fiord?)\, returns with a collection of autobiographical stories about growing up gay in small-town northern BC. \nBUY TICKETS HERE TODAY! \n(Online Tickets are available until 6PM on the night of the show. All remaining tickets will be sold at the Door at 7:30PM)

SUMMARY:Tomatoes Tried to Kill Me but Banjos Saved My Life
DESCRIPTION:Tomatoes Tried to Kill Me but Banjos Saved My Life isn’t just a show\, it’s a cause. A heartfelt passion project that began as a nudge after Keith Alessi’s life took a major turn\, it has been his mission to raise money for causes close to his heart. Through donations\, including 100% of all artist fees\, the show has raised over $1.3 Million Dollars (CAD) as of March 2026 for various charities including cancer organizations\, music programs\, community groups and artist funding and development. \nThe show has sold out runs across Canada\, Off-Broadway in New York City\, and at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland 3 years in a row. It has toured internationally including Canada\, the US\, England\, Scotland and Australia. \nKeith shares his exceptional true story of leaving the world of corporate board rooms behind to follow his long-delayed passion—playing the banjo! When faced with a deadly cancer battle\, his musical pursuit took him on a journey that became the key to saving his life. Told through authentic storytelling\, heartfelt humor and music\, Keith’s story is an uplifting tale of challenge\, triumph\, and the the healing power of the arts and music. \nTHE SHOW\nEveryone has a story.  Your stories matter. \nKeith Alessi had a story. \nHe was neither an actor nor a musician\, and his journey to the stage was a highly improbable one. But this show is a reflection of the power and purpose our stories can have when we share them with the world in an authentic and honest way. \nThe grassroots sound of the banjo lures you in and brings you back to a simpler time in life\, as Keith takes you on the journey of his unique personal story about how music was the catalyst to ultimately saving his life. \nA heartwarming\, true story of transformation\, this show is like a homecoming\, and has captivated audiences internationally. \nEveryone has a story. \nWhat’s yours? \nDIRECTOR’S NOTE\nFROM ERIKA CONWAY \nKeith’s story is as important as it is compelling and a meaningful lesson for all of us. \nOur stories change us\, challenge us\, and define us.  There is healing in speaking out the truth.  Life can throw us obstacles but\, if we choose to look at it through a different lens\, they can be the gifts to steer us back to ourselves and our souls. \nThis has been the heartbeat of the show and the magic I have attempted to capture and draw out in the sharing of his personal story. \nKeith is an entertaining and dynamic storyteller but it’s his bravery\, authenticity and vulnerability on stage that holds the real power to this piece. We have purposefully constructed it in a way that allows him to engage you in the journey\, disarm you with music and humor and then pull at your heartstrings. \nIt has been an absolute privilege to be a part of bringing this incredible story to the stage and it is my hope that it will cause you to reflect on your own journey\, wake you up to listen to that nudge inside of you and unlock the passions that have been tucked away. \n\nKeith Alessi – Writer/ Performer\nBefore taking to the stage\, Keith was well known as a successful public company CEO\, having run companies in both Canada and the United States.  He has been a college professor\, entrepreneur and has served on numerous corporate and charitable Boards of Directors. \nA dual Canadian/US citizen\, Keith lives in Meadows of Dan\, Virginia. He is a certified public accountant and received his MBA from the University of Michigan\, Ann Arbor. \nKeith has been touring the show internationally since 2018 across the United States\, Canada\, the United Kingdom and Scotland. \nHere is his LinkedIn Page to find out what he did before taking to the stage! \n\nErika Conway – Director/ Producer/ Dramaturg\nErika Conway is a Canadian actress\, writer\, director\, and creative collaborator with over 35 years in the performing arts across theatre\, film\, and television. Her passion lies in working with people to unlock their innate creativity\, personal stories\, and authentic voice. Her work is grounded in a belief in the healing power of storytelling\, community connection\, and art that gives back. \nErika is the director and producer of the internationally touring solo show Tomatoes Tried to Kill Me But Banjos Saved My Life\, which has toured across Canada\, the United States\, the UK\, and Australia. She has been privileged to collaborate on the show since its conception in 2018\, and it remains one of the highlights of her career. \nWhen not touring\, Erika develops workshops and creative programs supporting others in finding their voice\, reclaiming creativity\, and coming home to themselves through story. \nVisit Erika’s website to connect with her for more information.

SUMMARY:Rae Spoon in Concert
DESCRIPTION:Rae Spoon is a musician\, producer\, and author. They have released thirteen solo albums spanning folk\, country\, indie rock\, and electronic genres and published three books (Arsenal Pulp Press). Rae has been nominated for two Polaris Prizes\, a Lambda Literary Award\, and a Western Canadian Music Award. They have toured internationally (Canada\, Europe\, the USA\, Australia\, China\, Japan\, Korea). \nRae is a non-binary\, trans artist who lives with multiple disabilities. Their newest album\, Assigned Country Singer At Birth (2026)\, marks their return to country music. The album is equally subversive and relatable\, a testament to the fact that country music is as expansive as the people who are connected to it. Songs about trans folks\, harm reduction\, Disability\, inclusion\, religious trauma\, solidarity and opposing colonial land occupation may seem antithetical to traditional country\, but they are as much a part of Spoon’s experiences as love songs\, trucks and beer.

SUMMARY:Creative Watch Party - Nightbitch!

Let the movie inspire your writing\, drawing\, arting of any kind in the low-lighting\, with popcorn and drinks! And of course\, you can simply come to watch if that suits you better. \nNightbitch is a film created from Rachel Yoder’s book\, turned into a stunning piece of comedic horror by Director Marielle Heller and starring Amy Adams: “An artist who pauses her career to be a stay-at-home mum seeks a new chapter in her life and encounters just that\, when her nightly routine takes a surreal turn and her maternal instincts begin to manifest in canine form.”\nWhat’s not to love and resonate with?! \nTickets at the box office from 7.30pm\, show at 8pm. Concession available and there will be time for discussion with Sarah Guest and EmmaJ over drinks afterwards too.

SUMMARY:The Chimney Swallows
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday\, October 25th @ 8PM at The Sunset Theatre! \nThe Chimney Swallows are a unique folk music duo and microtheatre troupe composed of songwriters Raghu Lokanathan and Corwin Fox. Playing music together casually\, while working for (& picketing at) the Victoria Public Library the friends discovered they had a mutual affinity for long conversations\, song games and the stories of random strangers\, & so began The Chimney Swallows. \nThis is a spontaneous opportunity to enjoy a special performance by this unique duo as Raghu now resides in Prince George and Corwin on Vancouver Island\, so it is rare to see them together\, much like the avian phenomenon after which they are named. \nTo create ‘Cut Down’ Raghu and Corwin memorized actual conversations they had with their elderly neighbours and used them to create a new conversation between two old men who never met in real life. ‘Cut Down’ is an exploration of aging and change\, and gently touches upon the universal suffering and hilarity inherent to both. Please be advised there is some strong language. \n‘Has There Been a Time Since?’ is a short spoken experience that leads the audience through a weekend at a music festival from the perspective of a veteran performer who is observing the experience they are having while they are in the throes of it. \nTickets are $25.00
