SUMMARY:LARRY
DESCRIPTION:Since we first heard about this award-winning hit show\, we’ve been keen to bring Canadian Clown Artist Candy Roberts to the Sunset stage: she’s fucking brilliant\, and we are lucky to have her. \n(Yes\, we used the F-word\, because this show is for adults.) \nRoberts assumes her alter ego\, LARRY\, in this daring and comedic piece about one dude’s hilarious attempt at self improvement. With rock and roll\, a little “life-couching”\, and a dip into his own psyche\, LARRY uncovers a little more than anyone expected. \nCulled lovingly from the male archetypes that surrounded her during her upbringing\, LARRY helps Candy compassionately examine the limitations of the gender binary\, aging as a woman in society\, and the complexities of being human. \nThis show is for anyone who is\, or knows a woman. Gear-down Big-Rig\, you just might bust a gut and shed a tear! \n(This show is adult-oriented\, recommended ages +18)

She shows her process in real time through infusing it into her soulful “ancestral-roots and rhythm” musical sound and writing. Integrating her learning through creating. Ben has that magical balance of the bygone songwriting era; his lyrics are at once specific to his life\, and universal to the human experience. Ben draws inspiration from observation and is a natural storyteller\, captivating his audience with vulnerable ballads of love and loss – with a dash of uptempo guitar pickin’ and humour for good measure.\nwww.benmatchettmusic.com\nInstagram @benmatchettmusic\nFB @benmatchettmusic\n\nTHEATRE | BREAK A LEG BY BRIAN FIDLER*\n*The participation of this Artist is arranged by permission of Canadian Actors’ Equity Association under the provisions of the Dance•Opera•Theatre Policy.\nBreak a Leg is a collectively improvised tale inspired by Tramadol\, extra-strength Tylenol and the power of community. Created through the haze of a badly broken leg\, Fidler draws the audience into his experience through storytelling and games that speak to the better part of human nature and our innate desire to help each other in challenging circumstances.\nBrian Fidler- Performer/Creator\nFor over 20 years Brian has been making theatre\, creating outdoor multi-disciplinary events and directing shows in his hometown of Whitehorse\, Yukon (the Traditional Territory of the Kwanlin Dün First Nation and the Ta’an Kwäch’än Council). His cardboard science fiction puppet shows and original plays have been presented across the country and have toured to every community in the Yukon. Brian is the Creative Producer of Theatre in the Bush\, a site specific outdoor event set deep in the boreal forest. In the summer of 2024 Brian will return to Wells to create a customized version of Theatre in the Bush as part of the ArtsWells Festival.\nwww.ramshackletheatre.ca\nInstagram: @ramshackletheatre\n\nMUSIC | GENEVIEVE JAIDE\nGenevieve’s latest release\, “Why Am I Like This”\, was written as a coping mechanism to work through her personal mental health journey. The title track is a familiar story about social anxiety in which you wish you could promptly teleport *literally* anywhere from the situation that you are in – a pretty relatable feeling. The EP sifts through different memories and digs deep into the strange realities of one’s messy mind. The genre jumps around from alternative\, folk\, indie-pop\, to Canadiana\, but maintains Jaide’s lyrically driven\, terrifically vulnerable singer-songwriter vibe.\nGenevieve Jaide is a northern blooded songstress inspired by the environment\, nature\, and the alluring people she has met throughout the years. She carefully releases heavy emotions through lyrics and melodies\, and pairs these feelings with a groovy alternative vibe.\nHer folk alternative sound is accompanied by: Brock Patch\, Connor Pritchard\, Michael Lurincic and Calvin Hilde.\nGenevieve currently resides in Northern BC on Lheidli T’enneh Territory with her partner\, two orange cats\, and dog.\nhttps://www.genevievejaide.com\nInstagram: @genevievejaide\nFacebook @GenevieveJaide

SUMMARY:Pier 21
DESCRIPTION:Pier 21 is a moving musical\, written and directed by Allen Desnoyer\, and uses a blend of Celtic and swing music to tell the stories of those who fled from Europe and arrived at Pier 21\, the gateway to Canada. \nDesnoyers said the concept for the show was something he had been thinking about for the better part of a decade. \n“When Syrian refugees began arriving in my hometown of Ladner\, B.C. in late 2016\, the tenant at my home was from Libya and became a translator to local refugees and it seemed crucial to find a way to tell a story of people fleeing a war zone\, but also make it an entertaining show\,” he said in an email interview. \nA visit to Pier 21 in Halifax in 2017 inspired him to begin writing a Celtic flavoured show that could incorporate immigrants and Second World War brides as well as swing music. \n“Finding out that Pier 21 was where the troops departed from clinched the need to focus on the (Second World War) era itself and provided the show with a clear beginning\, middle and end\,” he said. \nThe production has been embraced and has been performed close to 250 times across Canada including a visit to Pier 21 in 2019. The pandemic cancelled the show that was planned for Ottawa on the 75th anniversary of VE Day and one planned for Steinbach in spring of 2020.

This multi-award winning play is written and performed by Julia Mackey and Directed by Dirk Van Stralen. It was one of three plays to come out of our inaugural Exploration Series in 2006. \nSynopsis: \nJake’s Gift is a surprisingly funny drama about a Canadian WW2 veteran’s reluctant return to Normandy for the 60th Anniversary of D-Day. \nWhile revisiting the shores of Juno beach\, Jake encounters Isabelle\, a precocious 10-year-old from the local village. Isabelle’s inquisitive nature and charm challenge the old soldier to confront some long-ignored ghosts – most notably the war-time death of his eldest brother\, Chester\, a once promising young musician. \nAt its heart\, Jake’s Gift is about the legacy of remembrance and makes personal the story behind one soldier’s grave. \nWritten & Performed by Julia Mackey \nDirected by Dirk Van Stralen \nwww.jakesgift.com \nThe show is 1 Act and runs 65 minutes with no intermission. \nTickets are $20 for Adults\, $18 for Sunset Theatre Members and $10 for Teens and Kids. The play is recommended for Ages 10 +
