SUMMARY:Medicinal Plant Walk
DESCRIPTION:ave you ever wondered what that little flower is on the forest floor or which plants are safe to eat and which are not? Join Birch Kuch on Saturday August 6th from 1-3 pm for an afternoon walk through the Wells marsh and Community Forest to identify many of the useful plants that grow all around us.  We will focus on abundant species that are resistant to over harvesting while discussing wildcrafting ethics\, processing techniques\, and common ailments suitable to herbal treatment. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBirch’s passion for wild medicinal and edible plants started as a child picking berries.  As he grew up he found out that many of his favourite smelly plants\, from yarrow and wild mint to willow and aspen\, are actually useful to us as medicine. \nHerbal medicine is not a replacement for mainstream medicine\, but the two complement each other very nicely. A basic understanding of safe local herbs can help prevent and ameliorate some of the ailments that modern medicine struggles with. \n\nThis workshop is Pay What You Can \nReserve your spot here (you can only book one space at a time): https://islandmountainarts.as.me/plant-walk

SUMMARY:“My Art is Activism” - In conversation with Sid Chow Tan
DESCRIPTION:Island Mountain Arts is honoured to be hosting video documentarian\, community organizer\, and media producer Sid Chow Tan – along with a team of researchers/artists – in a residency through the beginning of August. Join us for a conversation on August 7th in the Island Mountain Arts Gallery as we delve into Sid’s prolific career\, inspired activism\, and community-centric approach to organizing and effecting change.\n\nSID CHOW TAN 周明輝 is perhaps best known for his anti-racism work\, community organizing\, and community-based media productions. Most significant is his highlighting the injustices of 62-years of racist Chinese head tax and exclusion legislation and its ongoing generational impacts. Working actively as a producer\, videographer\, teacher\, and organizer since 1986\, he is a founding director and member of the Community Media Education Society (https://www.vcn.bc.ca/cmes/1pages/about.htm)\, Head Tax Families Society of Canada (http://www.headtaxfamilies.ca/)\, and past President of Full Figure Theatre Company Society dba Full Figure Media and ACCESS Community Television (Facebook @ACCESSCOMMUNITYTV). Semi-retired\, he continues to reside in Vancouver’s Chinatown (100 block East Hastings) on the unceded and traditional territories of the Coast Salish peoples – sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish)\, səl̓ílwətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh)\, and xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam) nations.\n\nHere is a photo of Sid Chow Tan with his heroes\, the late Charlie Quan and Gim Wong.\n(From left to right: Sid Chow Tan\, Charlie S. N. Quan\, and Gim Foon Wong.)\nPhoto by Eric Chan\n\nLocation: Island Mountain Arts Public Gallery (2323 Pooley St.)\n\nLight refreshments will be served!

SUMMARY:Kids Nature Camp: Wondrous World of Plants
DESCRIPTION:Have you ever seen a juicy berry while walking in the woods and wondered if you could eat it? This program will help you to discover the bounty of edible plants that thrive in the forest. Participants will learn about sustainable harvesting practices that ensure the health of the plants and foraging safety. SUMMARY:Island Mountain Harp and Cello School: Friday Night Concert with Dave and Shoshanna
DESCRIPTION:Cap off our week-long historic Harp + Cello School (36 years!) with this early evening concert featuring Prince George’s Shoshanna Godber! Shoshanna’s concert will include sorrowful Scottish airs\, cheerful Irish jigs\, originals and even a pop song for good measure! Shoshanna will be joined by partner in music and life\, Dave Godber on guitar and Irish whistle.\n\nABOUT SHOSHANNA:\nShoshanna Godber is a Canadian harpist\, singer\, pianist and banjo player. She began her musical education with classical violin\, piano and voice but was always drawn to her mother’s Celtic music records. She started playing the harp while completing her Bachelor of Music at the University of British Columbia\, and it very quickly eclipsed all of her other musical interests. Her repertoire has expanded from Celtic to traditional folk from all over the world\, classical and contemporary compositions. She is a diverse performer and enjoys giving concerts of traditional and contemporary music with her guitarist (and husband) Dave Godber. She also performs regularly with Alban Classical and with her colleagues for the Prince George Conservatory of Music’s chamber concert series. Shoshanna has recorded three albums of children’s folk music and has contributed to other artist’s projects as a session musician. Her catalogue of sheet music on Harp Column and her website is steadily increasing with her arrangements for harp and voice\, harp ensemble and solo harp. Since 2012 Shoshanna has taught harp and directed a harp ensemble at the Conservatory and loves empowering her students to achieve their harp dreams. Shoshanna loved being the Novice Harp instructor at the IMA Harp School last year and is looking forward to connecting with harpists in person this summer.\nhttps://www.shoshannagodber.com\nhttps://www.youtube.com/c/ShoshannaGodber\n\nLOCATION\nThe Sunset Theatre\, Wells\, BC AND Online\n\nTICKETS\nThis event is a part of the Island Mountain Arts Harp + Cello School and is pay what you can.
