SUMMARY:34th Annual Virtual Harp & Cello School
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Harp & Cello School Registration Now Open\nWe are pleased to announce that\, although we had to cancel the ‘in person’ school this year due to COVID-19\, the 34th Annual Harp & Cello School will take place virtually\, Monday\, August 17 – Friday\, August 21\, 2020. Mark your calendars and register below. Scholarships and bursaries are also available. \nInstructors: Sunita Staneslow\, Seumas Gagne\, Sharlene Wallace\, Marilyn Rummel\, Morag Northey and special guest Tristan LeGovic. \nWhat Does a Virtual Harp & Cello School Look Like?\nRegistrants will do a live on-line two-hour interactive class each morning (Monday to Friday\, 9:30am – 12pm) with their instructor and their harp or cello\, there will be one “special topics” session each day with one of the instructors (mostly a listening class)\, and then a short concert every evening at 5pm featuring an instructor\, with a couple of ceilidh style student performances to begin. We’ll try to be our usual informal\, supportive style retreat\, and try to meet needs of all our participants as best we can. \nThe classes will be 2 hours\, with a 1/2 break in between – where coffee and talking will reign – there should be few enough students in each that we can somewhat chat with each other – we know that so much of the pleasure of coming to Wells is meeting your old harp & cello friends every year! \nSharlene Wallace (Novice/Advanced Beginner)\, Seumas Gagné (Intermediate)\, Sunita Staneslow (Intermediate/Advanced) and Morag Northey (All Levels Cello) will be teaching the morning workshops. And while Sharlene’s class is not for complete beginners\, they are welcome IF they take the Harp Start class the week before. It will be offered at no additional cost to registrants for the Novice class. Marilyn Rummel\, Island Mountain’s Harp School Founder and Artistic Director\, will be offering that. Please get in touch for more information (info@imarts.com). \nWe’ll all join together for the special topics in the afternoon 2 – 3pm\, and for the concerts at 5pm. \nWe are happy to say that Tristan Le Govic will be playing one of the instructor concert nights\, and have a special topic as well all the way from France! \nPlan for a virtual ‘Welcome Reception’ at 5pm PST on Sunday\, August 16 to make sure you have all the information and technical know how to make your week a great experience! \nAll the classes will be done by Zoom\, and registrants will get the info they need well in advance. \nRegistration Information\nEarly Bird Rate (includes workshops\, special topics and evening concerts):\n$355 + GST (Must Register and Pay in Full by July 24)\nRegular Fee:\n$395 + GST (After July 24\, 2020) \nWant to just attend the afternoon special topics and the evening concerts?:\n$200 + GST \nScholarships and bursaries are available. Application deadline is two weeks before the program\, but classes do sell out\, so apply early.

SUMMARY:Mount Everest Challenge
DESCRIPTION:7th Annual Mount Everest Challenge\nMarch 14\, 2019 – March 15\, 2019\nMount Everest Challenge \nWhat is the Everest Challenge? The Everest Challenge is the brainchild of Len Sinclair\, co-owner of Troll Resort. He did the math and determined that if a person were to complete a certain number of designated runs (on our mountain) it would be the equivalent height as having climbed Mount Everest! \nWhat are those designated runs? The magic number is 20\, but 7 of those runs are mandatory. The 7 mandatory runs are Snow White\, Hurdy Gurdy\, Viking\, White Lighting\, Overlander\, The Rush and Racer’s Edge. The remaining 13 runs are skier/snowboarder’s choice. It is a true test of what you can accomplish…and it IS possible. Lifts begin\, for the challengers\, at 8:30am and run until 4:19pm. A hotdog lunch and refreshment is provided at the bottom of the red lift. \nThis event is open to ALL AGES and an AMAZING DRAW PRIZES is handed out to each age category\, who completes their 20 runs! Age Catagories are: \n7 & under\, 8-16\, 17-35\, 36-49\, 50 and over \n**18 years & under\, MUST have a signature of their parent or guardian to participate** \n– THE EVEREST BASE CAMP CHALLENGE for ages 7 and under\nEvery year we have some wee little ones and THIS year we wanted to give them their own attainable goal. Everest Base Camp. The equivalent distance to reach Base Camp is 12 runs. The 7 mandatory runs and 5 more of their choosing. \nENTRY FEE AND RULES for MOUNT EVEREST\nEntry fee is $30 per person and other than the opportunity to challenge yourself\, you will also receive the collectible Troll Mount Everest T-Shirt\, event sticker\, lunch\, beverages and your name entered into the prize draw\, should you complete the challenge!\nWe still have the popular Speed Pass available. This handy little pass allows you to cut to the front of the line (Red Lift)\, up to 6 times! Cost is an additional $10\, and can be worth it when you give your waiting friends a wave as you cut in front of them. \nRULES \n1.No speeding\, this is a challenge\, not a race.\n2.The 7 runs identified on the attached trail map must be taken. You will need to pick up\, on each of the identified runs\, the token for that run which must be given to the attendant at the TOP of the Red Lift station\, in order for you to be credited for that run.\n3.The remaining 13 runs can be taken on any of the runs off of the top of the Red Lift station. No speeding!!!\n4.At the end of your 20th run\, turn in your bib at the bottom of the lodge.\n5.You have to make 20 runs to get into the draw for prizes. Make sure you check on how many runs you have made.\nHot dogs and drinks will be served at the bottom of the Red Lift\, for lunch.\nThe prizes for each age group will be given out by a random draw\, in the lodge\, at 5:00pm. \nCAMPING at EVEREST BASE CAMP \nThis has become a yearly tradition (and another way to get your name entered into a draw). Winter camping is fun\, and camping with your whole family is even more fun! At the end of the ski day\, on Saturday\, campers are welcome to set up their tents and prayer flags (if they have any). There will also be fantastic DRAW for those who camp. Trust us\, you and your whole family will want to get your name entered into this one 😉 \nPOTLUCK and MOVIE \nThere will be a potluck dinner in the lodge at 4:30- 5:30. Following the dinner\, we will encourage people to get crozy and settle in for a movie on the BIG screen (thanks to Al Frisby). This is a GREAT way to keep warm\, enjoy the family evening atmosphere in the lodge\, and relax before the BIG day tomorrow! \nCome out and enjoy our 7th annual Mt Everest event.

Peter\, artist and scientist\, is the perfect mentor for outdoor painting; he understands so much about the land\, animals\, water and atmosphere and he shares all that he knows and loves with enthusiasm and spirit. We painted in the town\, at Bowron Lake\, summits on the road\, rivers and marshes\, and clouds in the sky. We honed our field studies in the studio. We worked hard and long and it seemed like play.” ~Louise Drescher\, Rossland\, BC \nParticipants will be given the option of staying in the new IMA residency multi-occupancy building “the Nest” or at any other accommodation provider in Wells. Each Artist will be provided with studio space\, as well as\, scheduled critiques\, demonstrations\, and ongoing hands-on work with Peter. \nPeter Corbett is considered by many to be one of western Canada’s leading plein air oil painters. Peter has been shown extensively in both public and commercial galleries\, been the recipient of numerous awards and has been a mentor and teacher in various capacities. He is also a professional biologist\, former outdoor adventure guide\, and loves to share his enthusiasm for nature while painting out-of-doors.

SUMMARY:FILM: Moonrise Kingdom
DESCRIPTION:Set on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965\, Moonrise Kingdom tells the story of two twelve-year-olds who fall in love\, make a secret pact\, and run away together into the wilderness. As various authorities try to hunt them down\, a violent storm is brewing off-shore — and the peaceful island community is turned upside down in more ways than anyone can handle. Bruce Willis plays the local sheriff. Edward Norton is a Khaki Scout troop leader. Bill Murray and Frances McDormand portray the young girl’s parents. The cast also includes Tilda Swinton\, Jason Schwartzman\, and Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward as the boy and girl. \nRating:\nPG-13 (for sexual content and smoking) \nGenre:\nComedy \nDirected By:\nWes Anderson \nWritten By:\nWes Anderson\, Roman Coppola \nRuntime:\n94 minutes \nCritical Mass: Tomatometer – 93% Audience Score – 86% \n“There are many echoes of Anderson’s earlier films\, particularly Rushmore and Tenenbaums. He’s an unapologetic romantic and Moonrise Kingdom is a study in wish-fulfillment.” \n– Sandra Hall\, Sydney morning Herald”This is a beautiful ode to first love with Anderson’s trademark style. The writing is sharp and witty and the cinematography and set designs are extraordinary. Moonrise Kingdom looks like a Norman Rockwell painting come to life.” \n– Michael Compton\, Bowling Green Daily News

SUMMARY:FILM: Doctor Sleep
DESCRIPTION:Doctor Sleep” is the continuation of Danny Torrance’s story 40 years after the terrifying events of Stephen King’s The Shining. Still irrevocably scarred by the trauma he endured as a child at the Overlook\, Dan Torrance has fought to find some semblance of peace. But that peace is shattered when he encounters Abra\, a courageous teenager with her own powerful extrasensory gift\, known as the “shine.” Instinctively recognizing that Dan shares her power\, Abra has sought him out\, desperate for his help against the merciless Rose the Hat and her followers\, The True Knot\, who feed off the shine of innocents in their quest for immortality. Forming an unlikely alliance\, Dan and Abra engage in a brutal life-or-death battle with Rose. Abra’s innocence and fearless embrace of her shine compel Dan to call upon his own powers as never before-at once facing his fears and reawakening the ghosts of the past. \nRating: \nR (for disturbing and violent content\, some bloody images\, language\, nudity and drug use) \nGenre: \nHorror \nDirected By: \nMike Flanagan \nWritten By: \nMike Flanagan \nRuntime: \n151 minutes \nCritical Mass: [Thanks\, Rotten Tomatoes] Tomatometer: 77% Audience Score: 89% \n“I think what I respected the most about Doctor Sleep is that it does feel like it’s trying to be its own film for as long as it can.”\n– Amy Nicholson\, FilmWeek \n“‘Doctor Sleep’ feels like the logical continuation to Stanley Kubrick’s adaptation of ‘The Shining.’”\n– Matthew Rozsa\, Salon \n\nSee less

Along with adventurer Adelina Fortnight (Zoe Saldana)\, our fearless trio of explorers encounter more than their fair share of peril as they travel to the far reaches of the world to help their new friend. Through it all\, the three learn that sometimes you can find a family in the places you least expect. \nAdmission: Adults $10 • Kids 12 & under $5 • Family of four $20\nAll tickets payable at door. We accept credit/debit cards with tap feature for payments via Square. \nRating: \nPG (for action/peril and some mild rude humor) \nGenre: \nAction & Adventure\, Animation\, Comedy \nDirected By: \nChris Butler \nWritten By: \nChris Butler \nRuntime: \n95 minutes \nCritical Mass: [Thanks\, Rotten Tomatoes] Tomatometer: 89% Audience Score: 67% \n”The film is sophisticated in its revisionist take on the adventure genre\, introducing social and ecological concerns into the mix\, though its irreverent humor is still accessible to children.”\n– Kathleen Sachs\, Chicago Reader \n”Amid the noisy\, epic action of most kid-oriented features\, this film’s story is clear and effective: a sweet-hearted narrative of how friendship can broaden one’s horizons.”\n– David Sims\, The Atlantic

SUMMARY:FILM: Jojo Rabbit
DESCRIPTION:Our post Oscar™ 2020 movie-night-theme continues: \nWriter director Taika Waititi (THOR: RAGNAROK\, HUNT FOR THE WILDERPEOPLE)\, brings his signature style of humor and pathos to his latest film\, JOJO RABBIT\, a World War II satire that follows a lonely German boy (Roman Griffin Davis as Jojo) whose world view is turned upside down when he discovers his single mother (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a young Jewish girl (Thomasin McKenzie) in their attic. There’s nothing trivial about it.”\n– Paul Byrnes\, Sydney Morning Herald

SUMMARY:Film: The Princess Bride
DESCRIPTION:“As you wish.” \n“Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya.\nYou killed my father; prepare to die!” \n“Inconceivable!” \nRotten Tomatoes Consensus: “A delightfully postmodern fairy tale\, The Princess Bride is a deft\, intelligent mix of swashbuckling\, romance\, and comedy that takes an age-old damsel-in-distress story and makes it fresh.” \nFun Fact 1: Wallace Shawn\, who plays Vizzini in the film\, also voices Rex for the Toy Story movies. A playwright and multi Obie Award-winner\, Shawn is also known for writing and starring in My Dinner with Andre. \nFun Fact 2: As a child\, Andre the Giant (not the same Andre from Dinner With™) used to receive rides to elementary school in his native France from existential playwright Samuel Beckett. \n[Thanks\, Wikipedia:] The Princess Bride is a 1987 American fantasy adventure comedy film directed and co-produced by Rob Reiner\, starring Cary Elwes\, Robin Wright\, Mandy Patinkin\, Chris Sarandon\, Wallace Shawn\, André the Giant\, and Christopher Guest. Adapted by William Goldman from his 1973 novel The Princess Bride\, it tells the story of a farmhand named Westley\, accompanied by companions befriended along the way\, who must rescue his true love Princess Buttercup from the odious Prince Humperdinck. \nRated PG • Running Time is 1 hour & 38 minutes \nTICKETS \nAdult: $8\nChildren 12 & under: $5 \nAll tickets payable at door. We accept credit/debit cards with tap feature for payments via Square.
