SUMMARY:Summer s'Wells || Looning into the Long Weekend
DESCRIPTION:Our Summer s’Wells series is back with our latest event: Looning into the Long Weekend! Why not start your long weekend early by joining us in the Garden at the Nest to take in the late summer sounds of Prince George’s Britt A.M. and Vancouver Island’s Ora Cogan.\n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nBritt A.M. marries a punk rock sense of urgency to melodic protest songs. Backed up by a band of Northern B.C.’s finest\, Britt A.M.’s set takes the crowd from toe-tapping to tear-stifling and back around to cutting a rug\, all whilst pondering the state of the world today. After releasing the pop-driven EP “GOLD” in late 2021 (to a well-received #10 ranking on the Earshot National Top 50 charts)\, Britt felt the urge to start shrieking again and so gathered Nathan Kelly\, Brin Porter\, and Justin Gendreau to help her cut an EP (for release later this year). Britt A.M. is excited to bring her band to Wells to share new songs alongside old favorites for the last show of the Summer s’Wells series.\n\nOra Cogan is a multi-disciplinary artist and singer-songwriter based on the West Coast of Canada. She is known for her singular voice and cinematic compositions. Cogan has released seven albums to date while collaborating with a multitude of artists and touring extensively throughout Europe and North America. She has performed at Le Guess Who Festival in the Netherlands\, Pickathon Festival in Portland\, Oregon and has shared the stage with the likes of Grouper\, Mazzy Star and Lido Pimienta. Her new album Bells in the Ruins was released July 13\, 2020 on Prism Tongue Records.\n\nThis event will take place on September 1st at 6:00 PM.\n\nThis is a dry event – leave the alcohol at home please!\n\nLocation: The Garden next to “The Nest”\n\nTickets are pay-what-you can\, but we suggest $15.00.\n\nRegister in advance at: island-mountain-arts.square.site

SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening Reception: Fire Season
DESCRIPTION:Island Mountain Arts is thrilled to unveil our final exhibition of our Summer Public Gallery series\, FIRE SEASON.\n\n\nCurated by Vancouver based artists Amory Abbott and Liz Toohey-Wiese\, this exhibition features the work of: Amory Abbott\, Ana Diab\, Kerri Flannigan\, Eli Hirtle\, Kay Penney\, Andreas Rutkauskas\, Liz Toohey-Wiese\, and Emily Wilson.\n\n\n“In cities\, wildfires are often a remote concept marked by smoky skies and heat warnings. Among small communities in the interior of BC\, wildfire is an annual threat that pervades the lives\, livelihood\, and economy of those communities. Where in urban centers\, an exhibition like this might be encouraging further empathy and understanding for the other regions of our province\, hosting this exhibition in Wells allows us to share the work of our contributors with a community that has experienced wildfire in manifest forms\, in a region deeply connected to forests and their management.” – Amory Abbott\, co-curator\, Fire Season\n\n\nAmory Abbott and Liz Toohey-Wiese are visual artists who have explored the topic of wildfires in their art practice. In 2019\, they began discussing the idea of creating an artist book that would center around the topic of wildfires\, and invite contributing artists\, writers\, researchers\, and community members who had been impacted by wildfire to contribute their insights on how to make sense of the increased prevalence and severity of wildfire on the BC landscape. The first issue of Fire Season was published in Fall 2020\, and the second issue will be released in August at the inaugural “Fire Season” art exhibition at Island Mountain Arts.\n\n\nFire Season’s opening reception will take place on August 25th at 6:00 PM.\n\n\nDates open: Thursday\, August 25th\, 2022 – Sunday. October 23rd\, 2022\nGallery Hours: Wednesday – Sunday\, 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM\n\n\nThanks to generous support from the Canada Council for the Arts and the Province of British Columbia Community Gaming Grant\, the Public Gallery is free to visit\, with donations graciously accepted.

Shoshanna has recorded three albums of children’s folk music and has contributed to other artist’s projects as a session musician. Her catalogue of sheet music on Harp Column and her website is steadily increasing with her arrangements for harp and voice\, harp ensemble and solo harp. Since 2012 Shoshanna has taught harp and directed a harp ensemble at the Conservatory and loves empowering her students to achieve their harp dreams. SUMMARY:TOAP@21 - A Group Show
DESCRIPTION:Have you visited our current Gallery Exhibit: TOAP@21 ? It opened at the beginning of July\, but hurry because the last day to view these amazing pieces is Sunday August 14th! \nIn 2021\, the lingering effects of the pandemic encouraged us to be creative with how and why we gathered together. SUMMARY:Medicinal Plant Walk
DESCRIPTION:ave you ever wondered what that little flower is on the forest floor or which plants are safe to eat and which are not? Join Birch Kuch on Saturday August 6th from 1-3 pm for an afternoon walk through the Wells marsh and Community Forest to identify many of the useful plants that grow all around us.  We will focus on abundant species that are resistant to over harvesting while discussing wildcrafting ethics\, processing techniques\, and common ailments suitable to herbal treatment. \n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBirch’s passion for wild medicinal and edible plants started as a child picking berries.  As he grew up he found out that many of his favourite smelly plants\, from yarrow and wild mint to willow and aspen\, are actually useful to us as medicine. \nHerbal medicine is not a replacement for mainstream medicine\, but the two complement each other very nicely. A basic understanding of safe local herbs can help prevent and ameliorate some of the ailments that modern medicine struggles with. \n\nThis workshop is Pay What You Can \nReserve your spot here (you can only book one space at a time): https://islandmountainarts.as.me/plant-walk

SUMMARY:Evening Bat Excursion
DESCRIPTION:From Superhero origins to bloodsucking shapeshifters and attic nuisances\, bats can be regarded in many different lights. In this workshop come learn why bats are truly spectacular and often misunderstood creatures. Bat researcher Brett Gandy will take us on an evening bat exploration to see and listen to the bats who make the forest their home. Come discover why Brett is so passionate about bats and gain a new appreciation for the little flying mammals. If you feel 11:30 is super late to end\, no worries\, you can come for a short while or stick it out to the very end .\n\nBrett is an incoming Master’s student at UNBC in their Natural Resource and Environmental Science Program\, to be supervised by Dr. Erin Baerwald. His research has aimed to better understand how bats use and select their habitat\, and how this can relate to selecting sites for both further research and conservation of our bat species. Brett is currently working in the Wells-Barkerville Community Forest this summer on an acoustic monitoring project that aims to determine which species of bats call Wells home\, as well as gaining insight into how these bats are using the different habitats that the community forest has to offer.\n\nThis workshop is PWYC. They have been making soap for the Quesnel Farmers Market and Edgewood Farms (their first wholesale outlet) and enjoying everything the Cariboo has to offer.\n\nSoapmaking is an art that has been bringing people together for centuries. Similar to quilting bees\, pioneers had soapmaking days where many people would get together to make soap for the community. She also loves researching beneficial plants that can be used in soapmaking and is looking forward to learning more about the foraging opportunities in the Cariboo.\n\nThis workshop costs $30.00 which covers the materials used.\nReserve your spot here (you can only book one space at a time):\nhttps://islandmountainarts.as.me/soap-making-101

SUMMARY:Martha Ritchie: Boreal Relief
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Hours Wed – Sunday 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM \nBoreal Relief is a collection of linocut prints based on images drawn from the forest that surrounds my home and studio in the Yukon. \nWhat started as prints on paper have evolved into three-dimensional paper sculptures and wearable prints on clothing. The sculptures and clothing items echo the images of boreal flora and fauna found in the wall art\, creating a sense of being present in the natural environment. \nThe work in this collection is both a celebration of the beauty and tranquility of the boreal forest as well as an expression of a desire to blend into nature. \nIn our world\, there has been an increasing disconnection from the natural environment\, but recently there is a growing desire to reconnect with nature for reflection\, relaxation and healing. The past two years have heightened this longing for a peaceful escape. Spending time in the Boreal forest is a gift that can provide this relief. \nMartha Ritchie \nMartha Jane Ritchie is an Artist and Printmaker who lives in Haines Junction\, Yukon Territory\, Canada with her husband and two sons. \nWhile attending Emily Carr College of Art\, Martha majored in printmaking and discovered Linocuts. She graduated with honours and continued working in the medium for the next 30 years. \nHer current work is drawn from the natural environment that surrounds her home in Haines Junction\, Yukon. \nwww.martharitchie.com

SUMMARY:Forest Relief Fabric Printing and Painting Workshop w/ Martha Jane Ritchie
DESCRIPTION:Join Martha Jane Ritchie for this two-day workshop June 25th and June 26th 2022. In this workshop\, we will draw our inspiration from the forest as we design and carve a unique printing block for textiles. Participants will apply their relief printing block to fabric and enhance the image with hand painting.\nThis is a fun way to repurpose tired clothes or find a new purpose for old textiles. Although\, synthetic fibres work with this process\, natural plant based fabrics such as linen and cotton give the best results. The fabric must be able to handle direct heat by an iron.\n\nParticipants should bring at least one item to work on\, such as a shirt\, skirt\, tablecloth\, napkins or piece of fabric. It is a good idea to bring an extra piece for back up. Also\, an in-phone camera is helpful and a favourite sketch book and pencil if you have one\, although options will be provided.\n\nThe workshop runs from 11:00am – 3:00pm both days\, with a breaks as determined by the Artist\, and includes access to the studio between instructional times!\n\nEarly Bird Fees to June 10th\, 2022! $90 (Supplies Inc.) + GST\n($22.50 – Early Bird Deposit)\n\nRegular Fees:$120 (Supplies Inc.) + GST\n\nPlease note that the class will run with minimum of 3 participants.\n\nOvernight accommodation options are available for added fees. Message residence@imarts.com for more details.\n\nYou can call our office from 11 – 6 Wed – Sun (250 994 3466) if you encounter any issues through the registration process
