SUMMARY:Writing Workshop with George Elliott Clarke
DESCRIPTION:George Elliott Clarke will lead writers in exercises to improve creativity and editing skills.  He will also ask volunteers to read back to the workshop their exercises and/or works-in-progress\, while feeling free to maintain privacy re: any raw work that seems too personal. Electronics are welcome\, of course\, but Clarke’s instruction will be by organic voice and hand-eye-coordinated pen/pencil/paper. Writers may wish to include the classic implements alongside keyboards and apps. Writers favouring any genre will benefit.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Peter von Tiesenhausen
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the IMA School for an artist talk with Peter von Tiesenhausen\, by donation. \nPeter von Tiesenhausen’s multi-media work deals with concepts of time\, life\, voyage\, death\, spirit\, nature and humanity. His practice has grown from landscape painting to sculpture\, performance and complex media installations. These are often an expression of where he finds himself and a utilization of what is at hand. Peter claims copyright on his land as an artwork. In the early 90s he started making boats of ice on bodies of water surrounding his studio and home now\, no longer possible due to the wildly fluctuating climate. His film Island explores the meaning and significance of the human compulsion to strive in the natural world despite its changing ecosystems. \nPeter has lived and worked in the boreal forest of northwestern Canada for most of his life\, where he pursues his interest in sustainability. Peter has exhibited across Canada\, in Europe and in the U.S. in public galleries and throughout the landscape. In 2016 he participated in “Watershed+ Embedded Artist”\, City of Calgary; Banff Centre Leighton Studio Residency; and led CO2 Residency in Demmitt\, AB. Peter received the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Distinguished Artist Award in 2015. In 2018 Peter’s solo exhibition\, “Songs for Pythagoras” at the Art Gallery of Alberta was accompanied by a significant hardcover publication with texts by Lucy Lippard\, Natasha Chaykowski and Ellie Epp.

SUMMARY:Expressive Watercolour Workshop with Simone Buck
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to invite you to join Simone Buck for this two-day workshop\, which delves into creative expression through abstract watercolours. And the best part\, all levels are welcome! \n“Everybody has a creative side\, it is the inner critic and our own judgement and expectation that is keeping us from connecting to our inherent creative source. My goal is to bring this inner critic into consciousness\, acknowledge it but also letting go of it\, so that the participants can loosen up and tap into their true creative potential” said Simone Buck. \nBiography\nBorn in 1971 in Germany\, Simone holds a degree in Graphic/Communication Design from the University of Applied Sciences\, Mannheim\, and has worked as a graphic designer in the scientific publishing industry for many years. \nSimone first developed her love of painting when\, as a child moving between Germany and West Africa\, she discovered she could create her own worlds as the outside world changed.\nSimone frequently and comfortably switches between very luminescent\, light and dynamic modes of painting and an achromatic style accompanied by a reduced use of shapes. Her paintings are a blend of spontaneous brushwork paired with consciously applied painterly techniques.\nLiving a life close to the wilderness\, away from cities built up areas\, her art naturally tends to revolve around organic structures and energy states in nature. Most of the work is left untitled as she feels it important that the viewer approach her work with no added influence\, so that he/she may freely arrive at his/her own interpretations. \nThe workshop runs from 9am – 3:30pm with a break for lunch.

SUMMARY:Migration Parade: A Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This exploratory workshop welcomes all to participate. The workshop is free to the public thanks to support from the Canada Council for the Arts\, Arts Across Canada Public Outreach program. This exploratory workshop welcomes anyone over 16 to participate\, no materials needed! \nLimited spots available\, secure yours by emailing info@imarts.com or calling IMA at 250-994-3466. \nThis workshop moves away from teaching technical skills and instead aims to cultivate and deepen sensitivity as it applies to the arts. \nThe first half of the workshop will be mindfulness exercises done individually\, in partners and in the context of the larger group\, specifically relating to two aspects of embodiment: attuned listening and manual/haptic sensitivity (becoming attuned to the wisdom of our hands as it applies to art-making). \nThe second part of the workshop will be an application of our explorations in the form of ephemeral art pieces. The impetus for the pieces will come from ideas generated by the group itself. In this way\, we will build on the aesthetic themes we have been exploring up until that point. \nThis workshop features arts-based sequences\, somatics\, mindfulness techniques and playful experimentation/inquiry drawn from our respective studio practices\, with references and anchoring in the work on display in the IMA gallery space. \nExperience in the arts not a prerequisite. Open mind and curiosity a necessity.

SUMMARY:Prototype: Meditations in Space by Rachel Chaisson
DESCRIPTION:PROTOTYPE/MEDITATIONS ON SPACE is a playful opportunity for a congregation of friends and strangers to envision\, reflect on\, imagine\, expand\, and hold their ideas of ‘space’ while interacting with typewriter space-making machines. Situated at the Sunset Theatre in Wells\, BC\, utilizing objects that have accumulated there throughout its history\, the artist invites participants to conjure portals of connection\, healing\, and good humour within themselves. \nBar & concession open | Children welcome\nEntry: by donation – funds raised will be donated to the Sunset Theatre. \nRachael Chaisson is a multidisciplinary artist working with intersections between sound\, movement and storytelling through objects. She constructs immersive\, meditative sculpture in which the viewer is invited to take time. Her practice takes a twofold path: one examining narrative and communicative relationships within “human space” and our devices\, the other asking questions about the sensory synapses connecting the body with the natural realm. Recurring themes within her work are other-worldly exploration\, microcosms and macrocosms\, and domestic-scale science fiction imaginings. She holds a BFA from Alberta College of Art + Design\, has shown in solo and group shows in home-base Calgary\, participated in the Banff Centre’s Emerging BAiR program and the Canadian Wilderness Artist Residency on the Yukon River. She is currently developing new bodies of work lightning notes\, sentinels\, and swamp thing as per a Canada Council Research + Creation grant. \nShe would like to acknowledge and express utmost gratitude for this time spent on the traditional territories of the Lhtako Dene\, sharing space with the stellar’s jays and foxes. A huge thank you to Island Mountain Arts and all their staff as well as Dave + Karen Jeffery of Sunset Theatre for making this experiment possible.

SUMMARY:Block Printing on Fabric with Mo Hamilton
DESCRIPTION:Block Printing on Fabric and Surface Design with Mo Hamilton!\nJoin Mo Hamilton Artist for this fun two-day winter workshop\, from\nSaturday\, Jan 26th to Sunday\, Jan 27th\, 2019\, 10am – 4pm each day. \nIn this workshop\, Mo will guide students through the process of block printing on fabric. You will learn about creating designs for fabrics\, carving blocks and the process of printing simple repeat patterns. We will explore a variety of techniques from ombre rolls\, two-coloured printing and jigsaw prints. We will cover what makes good design as it applies to fabric\, colour and texture. You will learn how to do offset printing and how to register your stamps so your work has a professional fabric look. \n“As an artist\, I obtain my inspiration from the external world around me\, but reveal in my paintings the internal world of my imagination. By reducing my images to their essential elements\, I can bring simplicity\, myth\, and the primal\, to my explorations of limits and boundaries with the intent of moving beyond them. Recently\, I have worked on a series of paintings that explore the soul’s journey. I have followed my vision to places I had not intended to go allowing my intuition to guide me. I have found power in words and incorporated them in my work; I have used collage and montage to go places I had not been before. I use life story as the dark\, rich compost to generate new creation and have in my most recent paintings worked more intuitively than ever before.” \nEarly Bird Price\n$230 + $30 material fee + GST\n(early bird deposit fee $57.50) \nRegular Price\n$255 + $30 material fee + GST

SUMMARY:'The 100 Houses Project: Reflections on Our Times' Exhibition Opening for Mo Hamilton Artist
DESCRIPTION:The image of home is a powerful\, archetypal symbol for finding our truest self\, or soul. We all have this profound longing to find home\, a place of deep belonging. To come home is to find a place where you can truly be yourself and to be home is to have a refuge from all the outward expectations and be in a place where you can listen to your own heart. When we are in touch with our inner selves home can be wherever we are at that time. \nThe 100 Houses Project that I am working on is a long-term project that began with the question “What is home?”. The idea for this project started with a profound dream I had when my family and I were leaving a home that we had lived in for ten years. This was a place where I had given birth to both of my children and where my husband and I grew from being a couple to becoming a family. Unfortunately\, it wasn’t economically viable for us to stay so we chose to leave because my husband got a steady job up north. I had packed all of our belongings into a moving van and we had our last sleep in our empty house. That night I had a dream that I was living in a house on a bridge. I thought the dream was such a profound visual metaphor for what I was experiencing in that moment because I was no longer staying in this home but I wasn’t at my new place either. I was in that in-between place. This got me thinking of the home as symbol for the soul and how the only steadiness we have is our inner strength. In The 100 Houses Project I use the symbol of the house as a way of expressing the steadiness of our inner homes or selves as we head out on our life’s journey. \nArtist Statement\nAs an artist\, I obtain my inspiration from the external world around me\, but reveal in my paintings the internal world of my imagination. I use life story as the dark\, rich compost to generate new creation and have in my most recent paintings worked more intuitively than ever before.
