Building coordination and control is a journey. Sunita will share tips on practicing that can boost your technique while enjoying and listening to the music you create. \nWe will work with a number of patterns that will become automatic. Landing the fingers in groups and patterns allows your fingers to control the tone and dynamics. We will work on creating flowing arpeggios between the left and right hands that will keep you inspired to play with greater dynamics\, breath and freedom. We will learn a few gorgeous melodies and understand some of the unique skills needed to create phrases on the harp. \nThe goal is to boost your technique and develop habits that elevate your playing so you can enjoy playing the music you choose. Explore ways the harp can soothe\, distract and inspire someone who is ill or in pain. We will work with different modes and improvise over a descending bass line. Keeping the music simple and being aware of breath and phrasing is the essence of therapeutic harp and builds the skills needed to play musically at all levels. \nAbout Sunita\nSunita’s love of travel and adventure has inspired her to become a versatile performer and arranger. Originally from Minnesota\, Sunita spent the past two decades living in Israel\, teaching and performing with local musicians before moving to Shetland. Drawing from Celtic\, Jewish and classical traditions\, Sunita’s playing is deeply expressive and creative. Working as a \ntherapeutic harpist in a children’s hospital near Tel Aviv enhanced her lyrical and improvisational style. Sunita’s numerous books of harp arrangements reflect her love of music from diverse genres and are played by harpists around the world. \nA graduate of the Manhattan School of Music and a passionate teacher\, Sunita has been a regular instructor at the Island Mountain Arts Harp School in Wells. Sharlene is an influential figure in the lever harp world for her performances\, recordings\, compositions\, teaching and for her use of this instrument in contemporary and original music. Commissions written for Sharlene include Rodney Sharman’s Music for Lever Harp\, Strings and Percussion and Alfredo Rolando Ortiz’s Niagara Moon. \nSharlene’s own compositions are featured throughout her nine independent albums. In traditional music\, swing brings the tunes to life. Without understanding it\, all the tunes would sound the same. This course is for those who wish to delve deeper into the traditional style and the most important swings of Breton music\, such as those found in the An dro\, the Hanter-dro\, and other typical dances. \nNo prior knowledge is required. You may have already played Breton music\, or you may not. We will begin by gradually learning a few tunes\, step by step\, and then we will explore arrangements and variations. The best way to feel the swing of a tune is to share it with others; therefore\, working in a group is essential. It may even be the only way to truly understand it. Ear training is indispensable in this workshop. \n____________________ \nSpecial Interest Class: Improvisation\nIn this workshop\, we’ll learn to improvise using tools to create groovy bass lines\, rich chords\, and melodic elements. SUMMARY:Jam Camp in the Mountains
DESCRIPTION:Sign up today to bring your family and friends to Jam Camp in the Mountains in beautiful Wells. Create music with us in the alpine meadows of our small community! Stay in your tent or RV\, or choose from many lodging options in Wells and Barkerville. \nCamp activities will be in the Wells School and outside during good weather. You can join us no matter your age or musical ability – beginner and experienced musicians are all welcome. There will be many workshop and lesson choices for you to enjoy. \nThis year\, Jam Camp in the Mountains is partnering with Island Mountain Arts\, an organization with almost 50 years of history. They are leaders in the arts community in BC who host the ArtsWells Festival\, arts workshops\, artist residencies\, and a public gallery\, and partner with organizations like the Jam Camp Society. Learn more about Island Mountain Arts here. \nJam Camp in the Mountains is \n1 hour from Quesnel\, \n2 hours from Prince George\, and \n10 minutes from Barkerville Historic Site. \nDates\nJam Camp will begin on Sunday\, July 26. Campers are invited to arrive in Wells late morning or early afternoon and be set up by 5 pm. Our first official camp activity is the Welcome Potluck that evening. \nOur final performance takes place on the evening of Thursday\, July 30\, and Jam Camp ends on Friday\, July 31. Friday is a free day for packing up camp\, saying goodbyes\, and taking your last stroll in the area before you go. \nThe full schedule of the week’s events will be sent out closer to the date\, and will be similarly structured to those of past camps. Morning activities will start around 9am. Activities include full group workshops\, small group lessons\, and songwriting/musical project groups. Days include a lunch & leisure break\, a dinner & leisure break\, and evening activities wrapping up around 9pm. \nRegistration Fees\nAll folks participating in Jam Camp aged 4 and up will pay a sliding scale registration fee of $200 to $500 CAD per person. \nJam Camp fees cover 4.5 days of workshops\, activities\, and instruction. \nFees do not cover food or accommodation. Groups must make their own arrangements for accommodation (see Accommodation section below) and are responsible for their own meals. Campers can make their own food or visit local restaurants. \nThe sliding scale allows campers to choose the payment that suits their family or group best. DESCRIPTION:The Toni Onley Artist Projects (TOAP)\, which focuses on the exploration and development of visual artists\, will have a maximum of 12 spaces available. \nThis year’s mentors are Cindy Mochizuki and Sandeep Johal! \nSaturday\, July 5th – Sunday\, July 13th\, 2025 at Wells\, BC \nLearn more about TOAP and its history – click here!~  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout The Mentors\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\nSandeep Johal\, Photo Credit Rachel Pick \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSandeep Johal\nSandeep Johal is a Punjabi Canadian visual artist\, advocate\, and leader whose practice engages drawing\, collage\, textiles\, and large-scale murals. Through her Indo-folk feminine aesthetic\, she confronts themes of bleakness\, despair and ugliness with their dissonant opposites: brightness\, hope and beauty. Johal’s work typically centers around the stories of women and while she highlights female suffering in its many forms\, these are ultimately stories of resistance and resilience. \nJohal has worked on a number of notable site-specific commissions including a series of banners on Granville Street in partnership with Downtown Vancouver BIA (2024)\, a mural for the Vancouver Art Gallery’s inaugural #SpotlightVanArtRental project (2022)\, a digital projection mapping for Facade Festival produced by Burrard Arts Foundation (2019)\, and a 4\,000 sf collaborative mural project for Vancouver Mural Festival\, which centred around the Komagata Maru Episode and involved the de-naming of the federal building it was painted on (2019). Her work was part of the group exhibition In/Visible: Body as Reflective Site through the McClure Gallery and Visual Arts Centre in Montreal in partnership with the IMPACTS Project (2019). \nJohal’s clients include Apple\, the Vancouver Canucks\, Vancouver Whitecaps FC\, Estée Lauder Canada\, Holt Renfrew\, Lululemon\, and Earls Restaurant Group as well as the University of British Columbia’s Peter Wall Institute for Advanced Studies and Simon Fraser University’s Morris J. Wosk Centre for Dialogue. She has been an artist-in-residence at Burrard Arts Foundation (2021) and Indian Summer Festival (2018) and is the 2019 recipient of the Darpan Magazine Artistic Visionary Award. Johal’s work is held in numerous collections\, including the TD Art Collection\, the Gordon Smith Gallery of Canadian Art\, Global Affairs Canada Visual Art Collection Program (Canadian Embassy\, San Salvador)\, and Surrey Art Gallery. \nJohal holds a Diploma in Fine Arts (honours) from Langara College (2007) and a Degree in Education from the University of British Columbia (2002). She lives and works in Vancouver\, BC\, Canada. \n\n\n\n\n\nVisit Sandeep’s Website\n\n\n\n\n\nCindy Mochizuki\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\nImage of Cindy Mochizuki\, submitted by artist \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCindy Mochizuki creates multi-media installation\, animation\, drawing\, audio fiction\, performance\, public artwork\, and community-engaged projects. She has exhibited her work in Canada\, US\, Australia\, and Japan. \nRecent exhibitions include the Art Gallery at Evergreen\, Kamloops Art Gallery\, Prince Takamado Gallery\, Nanaimo Art Gallery\, Surrey Art Gallery\, Vancouver Art Gallery\, Burrard Arts Foundation\, Frye Art Museum\, and Yonago City Museum. \nHer artistic projects integrate archival research\, oral histories and memory work and consider methodologies of gathering and re-telling stories that are often invisible\, excluded\, or undocumented.  A large body of her multi-media work explore the experiences of Japanese Canadians who were interned from the west coast of British Columbia during the second world war. Many of her animated films explore the lives of these first and second generations (isei and nisei) and their labour in the natural resource and food industries prior to their internment. \nShe received the Vancouver’s Mayor’s Arts Award in New Media and Film  (2015) and the Jack and Doris Shadbolt Foundation for the Visual Arts VIVA Award (2020). She has designed scenography\, illustration and animation for performing arts companies including Little Onion Puppet Co.\, Veronique West\, Rumble Theatre\, Theatre Replacement\, Dream Walker Dance Company\, Lisa Mariko Gelley\, Theatre Calgary and the Arts Club Theatre. She received her MFA from the School for Contemporary Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies.

SUMMARY:Introduction to Lino Cut Reduction with Mary Anne Molcan
DESCRIPTION:This workshop is a beginner to intermediate level course for those who want to expand their one colour linocut experience to two or more colours. No prior printmaking experience is required. \nLearn about the reductive format of printmaking\, where participants work with one lino block to create a multi-coloured layered print edition. Prints are generally created with a colour pallet that ranges in value from light to darker hues. After each coloured layer is printed\, the block is carved to eliminate the latest colour from being reprinted. This process continues until the last colour remains and the block is destroyed. \nDue to the deterioration of the block through this method every carving decision is final and participants learn to work with unintended mark making. Annie’s painting expresses landscape\, a sense of place\, and embodiment; she paints out on the land using ingredients from the surrounding place and her garden. This includes indigo dyeing and making inks and paints from wild pigments found in the earth\, botanicals\, and metals left from decaying industry. Annie’s personal art practice and practice in art therapy intertwine through the use of material\, connection to the land\, and her fellow artmakers in qathet\, BC\, the territory of the Tla’amin People.

SUMMARY:Stitching Geography and Memory with Shawn Grey
DESCRIPTION:About the workshop\nThis workshop explores creating cloth bags as collective storytelling. The workshop delves into\nthe movement of story through the application of stitching techniques. Participants will stitch\ncotton bags with decorative motifs interpreting experiences of geography and memory. \nInspired by Ursula Le Guin’s essay on the “Carrier Bag”\, the workshop replicates the invention and necessity of care offering a way for individuals to metaphorically hold one another together through story. Shawn will demonstrate and teach stitching techniques through the making of a small zippered cotton bag. Participants will receive a sewing kit with materials to stitch their own carrying bag. The stitching techniques can then be used by participants to appliqué or embroider basic motifs or images of one’s own expression onto the bag. The collective making of the bags opens space to consider how we carry information\, family history\, assumptions\, visions\, and how simple tools impact our lives in the moment and more broadly\, into the future as the skills are shared with one another and intergenerationally. \nAbout the Artist \nShawn Grey is a visual artist whose practice is rooted in connection and transformation. Combining elements of cloth\, video\, and narrative\, her work documents the everyday as a method to locate overlooked stories that carry and share collective knowledge. Her 2022 MFA thesis project\, “When Nobody Was Here\,” at York University\, documented the collaborative making of a 45-foot cloth banner that served to articulate the meaning of personal presence and relationship in relationship to self\, others\, and local histories. Shawn’s video montage\, “Occupied Acknowledgements\,” was screened at Toronto’s 2019 Nuit Blanche and her work is recognized by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council. Shawn is 3rd generation British/Hungarian descent\, born in Nanaimo\, British Columbia\, living and working in Toronto\, Ontario on territories covered by Treaty 13.

DESCRIPTION:About the Workshop\nJoin artist Lisa Cristinzo for a hands-on workshop on creating bioplastics from renewable biomass sources. Learn about the methodologies and technical aspects of material creation while exploring the environmental benefits of using bioplastics and distancing ourselves further away from the fossil fuel industry. From material introduction to cooking up bioplastics\, this workshop offers a unique experience in sustainable art-making. Lisa Cristinzo will also give a brief presentation on her own search for sustainable art-making practices\, especially as an acrylic painter making work through a climate crisis. \nAbout the Artist\nLisa Cristinzo is a queer painter and installation artist\, and a first-generation Canadian settler living in T’karonto on Turtle Island. Cristinzo’s large-scale painting installations traverse natural history\, climate hazards\, materialism\, and magic. She holds a BFA from OCAD U and an MFA from York University\, where she received a graduate scholarship and SSHRC federal funding for her research into fire and climate change. Cristinzo’s writing and artwork about fire was recently published in Fire Season II by Liz Tooney-Wiese and Amory Abbott. Lisa was accepted into the Doris McCarthy Artist-in-Residence Program for 2023. Along with being an artist\, she has spent over a decade managing arts programs and community cultural hubs\, including Artscape Gibraltar Point\, an artist residency and event space on Mnisiing/Toronto Island.

You will be able to experiment with different yarns\, design a colour palette and learn how to finish a weaving to hang on the wall. Materials will be provided. Ages 10+ \nAbout the Artist \nAna Diab is a multidisciplinary artist and art librarian living on unceded Coast Salish territories. Before receiving a MLIS from the University of Western Ontario\, Ana studied art at Capilano College from 2004-2006. She has worked as a librarian at Emily Carr University of Art + Design since 2016. She maintains a creative practice that involves tapestry weaving\, printmaking\, and contemporary dance. Her work explores themes of feminism and craft\, and climate change. Her weavings have been featured on album covers and in private collections in Vancouver. She is currently working on a series of weavings depicting mine sites in Canada.

SUMMARY:Forest Relief Fabric Printing and Painting Workshop w/ Martha Jane Ritchie
DESCRIPTION:Join Martha Jane Ritchie for this two-day workshop June 25th and June 26th 2022. In this workshop\, we will draw our inspiration from the forest as we design and carve a unique printing block for textiles. Participants will apply their relief printing block to fabric and enhance the image with hand painting.\nThis is a fun way to repurpose tired clothes or find a new purpose for old textiles. Although\, synthetic fibres work with this process\, natural plant based fabrics such as linen and cotton give the best results. The fabric must be able to handle direct heat by an iron.\n\nParticipants should bring at least one item to work on\, such as a shirt\, skirt\, tablecloth\, napkins or piece of fabric. It is a good idea to bring an extra piece for back up. SUMMARY:Reading with George Elliott Clarke
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the IMA School for an artist talk with George Elliott Clarke\, by donation. \nThe tiny rural community of Weymouth Falls sits on the banks of the Sissiboo River in a far-flung southwestern corner of Nova Scotia. Best known as the birthplace of world-renowned boxing great Sam Langford\, the predominantly African Nova Scotian village also served as muse for Black Canadian writer George Elliott Clarke (born 1960)\, who channelled the spirit and vernacular of the community into the 1990 book-length poem\, Whylah Falls. \nThose who’d been paying attention four years earlier when Dr. Clarke was a master’s student in English at Dalhousie would have been given a glimpse into the genesis of the epic poem\, now regarded as a Canadian literary classic\, in the pages of the student newspaper. “Weymouth Falls\, founded in 1815 by Black Refugees\, is a village in Digby County\,” reads an introduction to a poem by Clarke in a December 1986 issue of the Dalhousie Gazette. “It is a snowy northern Mississippi\, with blood\, not on magnolias\, but on pines\, lilacs and wild roses. This homespun spiritual is one of its first songs.” \nDr. Clarke\, raised in Halifax\, had worked in Weymouth Falls and other rural communities like it as a social worker prior to returning to school at Dal in his mid-20s. (He had previously earned his BA at the University of Waterloo). He says the experience was an “incredible introduction to the beauty of African Nova Scotian . . . speech\, and the stories\, and the folklore\, and the songs” and instilled within him a desire to acknowledge the richness of the language in poetry. \nAt Dal\, Dr. Clarke began to develop the distinctive lyrical style that has come to characterize his body of work. Flip to the acknowledgements in any of his books and you’ll find the name John Fraser\, the Dal poetry professor Dr. Clarke credits for changing his academic career and making him a much better poet. \nDr. Clarke soon left Nova Scotia to do a PhD at Queen’s University and has worked as a professor at universities outside the province for much of his career\, including the University of Toronto and Duke University. While geographically removed from his home province\, his literary output has remained largely focussed on exploring the history and cultural geography of “Africadia” — a term he coined to refer to the often-marginalized communities in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick built by the descendants of Black Loyalists and African-American slaves. \nDr. Clarke has won praise for tackling issues such as racism\, oppression and change in his poetry\, and as Canada’s Parliamentary Poet Laureate (2016-17) and a member of the Orders of Canada and Nova Scotia — as well as a Dal honorary degree recipient — he gained a broader audience than ever. But even in the pages of the Gazette all those years ago\, you’ll find evidence that his would be a unique voice in the Canadian literary landscape\, chronicling untold stories of love and grief in verse.

DESCRIPTION:Join us at the IMA School for an artist talk with Peter von Tiesenhausen\, by donation. \nPeter von Tiesenhausen’s multi-media work deals with concepts of time\, life\, voyage\, death\, spirit\, nature and humanity. His practice has grown from landscape painting to sculpture\, performance and complex media installations. These are often an expression of where he finds himself and a utilization of what is at hand. Peter claims copyright on his land as an artwork. In the early 90s he started making boats of ice on bodies of water surrounding his studio and home now\, no longer possible due to the wildly fluctuating climate. His film Island explores the meaning and significance of the human compulsion to strive in the natural world despite its changing ecosystems. \nPeter has lived and worked in the boreal forest of northwestern Canada for most of his life\, where he pursues his interest in sustainability. Peter has exhibited across Canada\, in Europe and in the U.S. in public galleries and throughout the landscape. In 2016 he participated in “Watershed+ Embedded Artist”\, City of Calgary; Banff Centre Leighton Studio Residency; and led CO2 Residency in Demmitt\, AB. Peter received the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Distinguished Artist Award in 2015. In 2018 Peter’s solo exhibition\, “Songs for Pythagoras” at the Art Gallery of Alberta was accompanied by a significant hardcover publication with texts by Lucy Lippard\, Natasha Chaykowski and Ellie Epp.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Diana Thorneycroft
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the IMA School for an artist talk with Diana Thorneycroft\, by donation. \nDiana Thorneycroft is a Winnipeg artist who has exhibited various bodies of work across Canada\, the United States and Europe\, as well as in Moscow\, Tokyo and Sydney. She is the recipient of numerous awards including the 2016 Manitoba Arts Award of Distinction\, an Assistance to Visual Arts Long-term Grant from the Canada Council\, several Senior Arts Grants from the Manitoba Arts Council and a Fleck Fellowship from the Banff Centre for the Arts. \nThorneycroft taught as a sessional instructor at the University of Manitoba’s School of Art for 25 years. Since 2010 she has been focusing on her studio practice full time\, and has gallery representation in Canada\, the US and Europe. \nThorneycroft’s installation Black Forest (dark waters) had its inaugural opening at the Art Gallery of Southwestern\, Brandon\, Manitoba in June\, 2018\, and was recently shown at the Art Gallery of Burlington\, Burlington\, Ontario. Next spring\, it will open at La Maison de la Culture Frotenac\, Montreal and in January 2020 at and the Nickle Galleries\, Calgary\, Alberta. A smaller version of the installation entitled Black Forest (village)\, will be shown at the Vernon Art Gallery in the fall of 2019.

SUMMARY:Migration Parade: A Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This exploratory workshop welcomes all to participate. The workshop is free to the public thanks to support from the Canada Council for the Arts\, Arts Across Canada Public Outreach program. This exploratory workshop welcomes anyone over 16 to participate\, no materials needed! \nLimited spots available\, secure yours by emailing info@imarts.com or calling IMA at 250-994-3466. \nThis workshop moves away from teaching technical skills and instead aims to cultivate and deepen sensitivity as it applies to the arts. \nThe first half of the workshop will be mindfulness exercises done individually\, in partners and in the context of the larger group\, specifically relating to two aspects of embodiment: attuned listening and manual/haptic sensitivity (becoming attuned to the wisdom of our hands as it applies to art-making). \nThe second part of the workshop will be an application of our explorations in the form of ephemeral art pieces. The impetus for the pieces will come from ideas generated by the group itself. In this way\, we will build on the aesthetic themes we have been exploring up until that point. \nThis workshop features arts-based sequences\, somatics\, mindfulness techniques and playful experimentation/inquiry drawn from our respective studio practices\, with references and anchoring in the work on display in the IMA gallery space. \nExperience in the arts not a prerequisite. Open mind and curiosity a necessity.
