The experiences of the veterans\, her own discoveries\, and a life long interest in Remembrance Day\, led to the development of the play in August of 2006 at The Sunset Theatre in Wells\, BC. \nTHE PLAY \nJake’s Gift is a multi-award winning Canadian play about a World War II veteran’s reluctant return to Normandy\, France\, for the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings. While revisiting the shores of Juno beach\, Jake encounters Isabelle\, a precocious 10-year-old from the local village. Isabelle’s inquisitive nature and charm challenge the old soldier to confront some long-ignored ghosts – most notably the war-time death of his eldest brother\, Chester\, a once promising young musician. At its heart\, Jake’s Gift is about the legacy of remembrance and makes personal the story behind one soldier’s grave. \nSince 2007\, Jake’s Gift has gone on to play at festivals and theatres in over 250 communities across Canada\, including International stops to Washington State\, the UK and Normandy\, France\, for the 70th & 73rd Anniversary of D-Day. In June 2019\, the company returned to Normandy for the 75th Anniversary of D-Day. They presented performances in both French and English at the Juno Beach Centre and La Salle de la Mer in Bernières sur Mer as well as other communities and venues in Normandy. \nIn December 2025\, Julia received the Governor General Meritorious Service Cross Award for her work on Jake’s Gift.

DESCRIPTION:Rae Spoon is a musician\, producer\, and author. They have released thirteen solo albums spanning folk\, country\, indie rock\, and electronic genres and published three books (Arsenal Pulp Press). Rae has been nominated for two Polaris Prizes\, a Lambda Literary Award\, and a Western Canadian Music Award. They have toured internationally (Canada\, Europe\, the USA\, Australia\, China\, Japan\, Korea). \nRae is a non-binary\, trans artist who lives with multiple disabilities. Their newest album\, Assigned Country Singer At Birth (2026)\, marks their return to country music. The album is equally subversive and relatable\, a testament to the fact that country music is as expansive as the people who are connected to it. Songs about trans folks\, harm reduction\, Disability\, inclusion\, religious trauma\, solidarity and opposing colonial land occupation may seem antithetical to traditional country\, but they are as much a part of Spoon’s experiences as love songs\, trucks and beer.
