SUMMARY:Half/Asian with Amy the CODA
DESCRIPTION:HALF/ASIAN with Amy the CODA are a synth pop duo that sing harmonies in English and sign language. Blending their voices and stories into a sound and performance that is truly unlike any other. A PSR 36 synthesizer from 1980 sets the tone and tempo. Their harmonious voices tell stories with heart. The incorporation of sign language allows hearing audience members to experience music in a deeper way and for sign language users to have more access to the lyrics and message behind the music. \nFor Ian\, it started with the purchase of a Yamaha PSR 36 from Value Village – and has grown into a distinct sound that pushes the boundaries of synthesizer programming – going beyond the parameters it was designed for. The lyricism ranges from fractured poetry to poignant storytelling and narratives. Their sound has been likened to Chromeo and early Gorillaz\, mixed with George Harrison. \nFor Amy\, it started with signing along to one of Ian’s songs and realizing that she had lost the majority of her sign language fluency through having a profession that is not centered around the deaf community and interpreting. Her performance fully embraces her bi-lingual and bi-cultural identity as a CODA (Child of a Deaf Adult) by including both spoken language and signed language. \n“As a band\, we work to create art that is meaningful to us. We both have bi-cultural identities\, and don’t always feel like we can fully be exactly who we are in every time and place. When we are creating or performing\, we are in this place where we embrace everything that has made us who we are. And by sharing it we allow these versions of ourselves to be seen.” \nChange starts with positive representation. We believe that art has the power to shift perspectives. \nBONUS: Come see the debut screening of their documentary\, Mother Tongue\, on Saturday 29 July.

SUMMARY:Unlocking Stories: An Evening of Music w/ Zach Kleisinger
DESCRIPTION:Doors at 7:30 PM.\nUnlock you Family Story (www.imarts.com/upcoming-workshops/2023/unlockyourfamilystory) is capped off with an evening of music\, story and wit from Vancouver’s Zach Kleisinger. \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nZach writes lyrically-driven songs in the contemporary\, darkened-folk\, singer-songwriter style. His words often feel like a bathroom mirror\, while his compositions tend to conjure an emotion akin to the heartbreakers on Dylan’s Blood on the Tracks. The strength of Kleisinger’s songwriting has a simple yet poetic intimacy that illustrates profound messages by magnifying the little things.\nSince releasing his EP\, I Hope It’s Calm\, Then\, in 2018\, Kleisinger has established himself within the alt-folk music community\, performing hundreds of concerts across Canada\, the UK\, Europe\, and the US. His live performances have gathered him a loyal audience\, where the comfort of his warm baritone voice and magnetic songs are often juxtaposed\, oddly and satisfyingly\, by dry\, unrehearsed humour.\nKleisinger’s latest record\, Their Symposium\, was released in August 2021 via DevilDuck Records to widespread acclaim. Since its release\, Their Symposium has charted on college radio across the US and Canada\, received generous airplay on Canada’s nationally syndicated radio network CBC\, and earned numerous publications in magazines such as Canadian Musician\, Americana UK\, Atwood\, and American Pancake. In the deep sea of indie-folk songwriters\, Zach Kleisinger is a narrator of raw emotions and real tales that will draw you into an intimate\, familiar world.\nwww.zachkleisinger.com\n\nLOCATION:\nThe Sunset Theatre\, Wells BC\n\nTICKETS\n$25.00 General Admission\n$20.00 Member\n$15 Youth under 18\nFree Youth under 10\nFree for Unlock Your Family Story Students\nThis event falls at the tail end of Unlock your Family Story\, a family history writing workshop. \nYou can get your tickets here: https://island-mountain-arts.square.site \n*A note for ticket buyers* – Square online requires a street address to process payments – if you encounter any issues\, call our office (250)-994-3466 between 11:00 AM and 6:00 PM from Monday – Friday. \nLive Music Presentation is made possible for Island Mountain Arts through the Government of Canada Department of Canadian Heritage\, the Province of British Columbia and Creative BC. SUMMARY:Sawney's Legacy
DESCRIPTION:Please join us this Thursday\, May 18th @ 8PM for a special performance of Sawney’s Legacy at the Sunset Theatre in Wells.\nDate: Thursday\, May 18 @ 8PM\nRunning Time: @ 70 minutes – no intermission\nBox Office Opens @ 7:30PM\nLicensed Concession Opens @ 7:30PM\nTickets are $20.00 or Pay What You Can and can be purchased at the door or online at https://www.sunset-theatre.com/tickets \nABOUT Sawney’s Legacy:\nSawney’s Legacy is written and performed by Brendan Bailey.\nBrendan has very generously offered this show as a fundraiser for the Sunset Theatre. Thank you Brendan! \nAn Edwardian doctor explores the legacy his father\, poet James Anderson\, of Sawney’s Letters renown\, left in a far away mining camp in a place called Cariboo. \nThis solo-performer play is written and performed by Brendan Bailey\, directed by Dirk Van Stralen\, designed by Emily Bailey\, produced by Noble Players Theatrics\, and developed with thanks to research provided by historian\, Richard Wright. \nSawney’s Legacy is a period piece\, runs approximately 70 minutes in length\, and at various times during the show explores privileged views of 19th century caucasian society as well as addressing adult themes around family trauma and bias. It is not recommended for those under 10 years of age. \nA biographical play about Barkerville poet\, James Anderson\, Sawney’s Legacy explores an enduring connection between father and son.\nAnderson\, an 1860s Scottish miner\, was known as the Bard of Barkerville and the Poet Laureate of the Cariboo. He was one of the province’s first published poets\, and was also known for his poems and lyrics compiled as Sawney’s Letters in 1867. He left Barkerville to return home to Scotland after nearly a decade in late 1871. His 10 year-old son\, David\, would grow to take after him as a prolific writer in the late 19th Century. \nSawney’s Legacy was developed in part through the Sunset Theatre’s Exploration Series on the ancestral lands of the Dakelh\, Lhtako Dené\, and Secwépemc Peoples in 2020. This was followed by staged readings in 2021 and a premiere during the Sunset Theatre Speakeasy Festival in July 2022. In late August 2022\, Sawney’s Legacy was performed in the Victoria Fringe Festival to great acclaim. \nFeedback for the play has included: “mesmerizing\,” “amazing\,” “deeply sensational” “a really specia lexperience\,” “awesome\,” “an insightful\, complex and comforting escape\,” “beautifully written and performed\,” “nothing short of remarkable\,” “a rich transport back into time\,” and “all history should be taught this way.”

SUMMARY:Lucky Break • Written & Performed by Chase Padgett (6 Guitars)
DESCRIPTION:We are thrilled to have Chase Padgett (6 Guitars) back on the Sunset Stage with his new show LUCKY BREAK.\nDATE: Monday\, September 5\, 2022\nTIME: 8PM\nRUNNING TIME: 60 minutes\nTICKETS: $20\nSynopsis:\nChase has wowed Wells/Cariboo Audiences previously with his multi-award winning show 6 Guitars.\nIn his latest work\, he uses his trademark singing\, guitar playing\, storytelling\, and music to deliver a deeply personal tale about gifts in disguise.\nDuring this 60-minute show\, Chase brings the audience through 3 different chapters of his 2021.\nThe first chapter revolves around the 2 months he spent taking care of his mother after a bad fall broke her leg. The joys and struggles of caring for an aging parent are contrasted by the second chapter of the show; the 2 months he spent filming “Alter Ego” for Fox. This reality based singing show discovered Chase from the only TikTok he had every posted of him singing. The ups and downs of becoming a semi-finalist on a major network talent competition are on full display including how what we see at home doesn’t always match what happens in the room.\nThe third chapter centers on saying goodbye to living in Vancouver\, Canada\, to embrace an unknown future riddled with questions and doubt. Only Chase’s classic singing\, guitar playing\, and storytelling could weave these three seemingly unconnected threads into a thrilling and moving journey of what really matters most when Hollywood comes calling.
